Newbie touching base

Hi folks

I am in England and I am the owner of a 1937 Terraplane Brougham in mint original condition that I bought from Duke Marley in NC about 15 months ago. It is certainly the nicest car that I have ever owned or ever will! Here in the UK we can get parts from the Railton Club, but they tend not to be that cheap, and I have been meaning for ages to ask for some US contacts for parts and spares (and Hudsonite - Duke gave me a bottle with the car but I am running out!). I am not in the HET yet, and I suppose that the first step ought to be joining them! Anyway, lots of work to do today, so I'll sign off there, but I wanted to say hi and touch base with y'all. And I am very tempted by Bill Albright's car that is for sale - it's so similar to mine that I suppose it would be silly to own two, but it looks a lovely car! Cheers - Alan Wesson

    Welcome to the Forum, Alan. I do hope you'll join the H-E-T, you'll find it an invaluable resource for finding parts, and a great clearinghouse for technical and historic information about Hudsons. (Not to mention, a great way to tap into the worldwide Hudson network of people!)

    Your car had been owned by a number of people over the years. I first saw it not long after I purchased my own Terraplane, in 1971. I was impressed at how original it was; I've never seen one closer to "factory" before. I know you'll take good care of it, and I hope you'll patiently answer the many questions that fellow '37 Terraplane owners will ask you about your car, because you own (in effect) a real "time machine" that is invaluable to those who need to know what these cars were like when new.

    Duke let me drive your car shortly before he sold it to you, and I was really impressed by the way it rode and shifted (with Electric Hand). My car is in very good mechanical condition, but the suspension is "hard" and "choppy", yet your car seemed much more softly "sprung". I don't know why.

    Welcome Alan;

    There are many 37 owners out here, so ask questions. I have a 37 sedan, and it's a great driving car. You have got some good adivse already. Great looking car by the way.

    Gene.
  • Thanks very much for the nice, welcoming emails, folks, and sorry I didn't check back in last night - I had to go on a long trip to collect a car, and I didn't get home until 2 a.m! I am pleased (and quite surprised!) to hear there are so many 37s out there, and I will happily co-operate in sharing information about my car if anyone has any questions. As you say, it is almost 100% stock, and I intend to keep it that way apart from things that have to be added for the British road regulations (i.e. turn signals and license plates!). Where I have had to add things like the turn signals, I have used period ones that look right on the car (see pic), and I have made sure the additions are all removable (so we didn't drill any holes, but used pre-existing bolts of pinch clamps). Will check back later, but I just wanted to send a quick message to say thanks! Cheers - Alan
  • You may want to call Harry Lashley he is Portsmouth, or Alan Jones in Waterlooville as they may be able to help you out. The Railton club members can be rather snooty, this I heard at the last National in Auburn Indiana. Harry has a 36 Terraplane Convertable Coupe. Welcome Aboard! Hudsonly Lou Cote :)
