Update 2 on my chopped 49 Brougham...
I took a bit of a break on the car. I didn't really do much for about a month. The weather was nasty, I was getting a bit burned out, and I met a gal.
Anyway. I've got most everything welded up now. Lots of grinding to do yet, but it's coming along.
(By the way, sorry for the crappy blurry pics. It was getting dark, and I turned off the flash because the flash was only showing raindrops).
Here's the car before I started on the door tops:
Hudsons have a lot of compound curves...the vent windows are not at the same angle as the driver's window, and the door tops go from thin to fat back to thin along the top. Most people cut the door tops in the center and add a piece. This wasn't going to work on my car, as it would have created a TON of work to get the vent window "bar" to line up.
I decided to re-curve the top of the door, and add a piece in the front of the door top to keep the wing window operable.

So last night, I decided that the car was "together" enough to take for a spin. Even though it was raining, and I have no sideglass, no heat, no wipers, etc, I HAD to take the car out. I threw the seat in and pulled into the yard. This was the first time I have had the car out of the garage to have a good look at the chop. I'm pretty happy with the lines.
Rolled her on down to the gas station to fill up. There was a "genericar" there in front of me, and I noticed how much lower my car is in comparison when I came back out of the station after paying for my gas...
I rolled over to a buddy's house and hung out for a while, checked out the killer choppers he and his room-mate are building, then came home.
Parked her in the garage for the night.

And, just for a side by side comparison, here's the roofline pre-chop and post-chop:

Your top chop Project is looking real Nice.Wonder if you are going to eliminate the vent windows... I like the front fender flares and the cool cars in the back gound too ......0
-
No. the vent windows will go back in after they are cut and re-worked.0

Looks good - you must have got the front glass cut - or did you drop it down inside?
Are you going to throw lead on this thing or bondo?
I think the biggest challenge will be getting the transition area smooth and crisp around the rear window-cut-surround.
If you want to do some lead work, me and Rambo will come over and help for some beers and dog snacks!0 -
Very nicely done chop dude! A friend of mine wants me to chop mine, but its not in the budget I think. I think the Brougham looks real good chopped due to its elongated roof line. The Coupes are a little short for much chopping. Yours sure has the right flow and lines, CONGRATS!!!!!! Its B*tchin!0

Looks really nice! Are you going to shave the door handles? Walt0

I had the glass cut. dropping it down was not really an option because the A pillars had to be leaned in a bit, so the glass had to be shaved on the sides some. The glass was cut 2.5 inches.
I'll use bondo. My best friend is a bodyman by trade, so he'll help with getting things smooth.0 -

It is getting Lincoln pushbuttons.0 -
Man that is one SIC A** Hud you got there. Any chance you have some pre- chopped side profile shots with the hood on? I did a photchop of one back in school back in the day that looked rel sleek but lost it over the years and would like to make another one for future reference when I can get my hands on a Brougham like yours to slice and dice:D.0

this is the ONLY one I have dead on with the hood on. I've got TONS of pictures of the car, but most are from a 3/4 view...

I can't believe you chopped that poor hudson.... haha... j/k
that is so clean, subtle, just a all around nice job. you did a nice job with the door tops, for sure. What an improvement on a brougham. This has been a fun one to watch...0 -
Fine Ryde!!
really enjoyed all the pics as I have not seen how all the work is done before this.0 -
I took some more pics last night. I haven't even touched the car in a week. I picked up a 38 Lincoln Zephyr 3 window, and a 61 Olds hardtop in the last week, and they have been occupying my time. (Actually, trying to figure out how to "rearrange" the garage took most of my time).
a couple of pics of the rear window area for those that asked...
And some 3/4 shots to show just how short the car is now. Check out how low it is compared to my GF's KIA...
and a profile shot in front of the house...

That looks very good, I think there will be a lot of Hudson guys that are envious too!
The pictures that show the Kia really make it easy to see how low your car is.
Nice job!

I did, thanks. I've got 3. One for each door, and one for the trunk release inside the car.0 -
I haven't been on here in a while, and was getting caught up on previous post. Man, that is one cool ride! "Low and Slow". Keep posting pictures of that great work!0

Yes, I agree with everyone else....very cool. Do you have any pics of the c-pillar cuts during fab? I really like the 2 dr sedan, but haven't been able to find one I can afford.....so I might buy a 4 dr and try to convert it.0

Hi,
Any chance you could post some pics of what they look like on the door. The car I have just bought has had the door handles shaved but I legally require an accessible opening from the outside and I don't know what to use to keep it looking simple.
Cheers

Are electronic fobs that control a door opener legal there? Very simple to install. Also, you can easily attach a cable to the release mechanism and hide the end of it in a wheel well, as a mechanical back-up in case of battery failure.0
