Spring fever in Socal

Alright, now that I have your attention. I've got to replace the rear springs on my 55 Hash with connie kit. I've got Bill A's guy Edgar pulling a set of a Hash that look good but a buddy told me the connie equiped cars had heavier springs. That makes sense but without counting coils the springs on Bill's car look like mine but without all the deformed coils, mine are completely shot, they look like someone torched them to get the back end down but I think they are just shot. So does anyone know if the continental kit cars had heavier springs. If so could I just add internal springs to boost the lift as long as they didn't interfere with the shocks? Oh, and as to the spring fever, I'm going crazy at work this week as the weather is great and I want to be out driving the Hash.

  • Harry,

Just wondering why you would replace used springs with used springs? Why not contact the company that originally made them and get a set of new replacements?

  • Budget constraints my friend. Right now the springs on the car scare me as they are badly deformed. So I'll put a set of used springs in better shape on for now and go for new springs when the bank is in better shape. The first item on my shopping list is new radial www tires. I don't remember ever seeing springs collapse the way mine are right now and I don't want one breaking at an inopportune time so used springs for now as long as they are better than what I have.

You can use air bags in your coil springs, but they cost as much new springs, I think. See this link for an example.

  • Mars55, not sure they would work on the Hash with the shocks running up the middle of the springs.

  • What the heck happened to the springs, too much junk in the trunk? :)

10-4 on the moola situation. You do what you must to stay safe and prevent damage to the car. What brand of wwl radials are you considering and will you use your stock rims?
  • Dave; I really don't know, I've never seen springs fail like these have, the top coils are perfect and the bottom three coils are collapsed but not symetrically, in some places they are touching each other. I was looking at the Diamondback website and will probably go with the stock rims and hubcaps if they will stay on, I understand sometimes the radials will dislodge hubcaps. I have biased ply tires on the car now that are pretty weather checked and cracked from sitting so long. I wouldn't want to go on a freeway trip with them so I probably won't be driving up to the western regional meet. I don't think I could go 400 miles with the worry of blowing a sidewall out and not get a few gray hairs along the way.

Well, that's bummer. You might try some air shocks like these.

  • Heck Harry, now you know darn well if puttin on the used springs was wrong ole Bill wouild give you a pleasant tonque lashin, I don't think he'd sell you any junk, And they wont need to be replaced unless they should fail later on, my bet is they won't. Never heard of such a thing as any car with conty on it needing heavy springs, heck they don't weigh as much as the groceries {or cost as much either !!} dust, dust, sprinkle sprinkle, there that oughta do it. Bud
  • Bud, yeah, I trust Bill not to let me do anything too stupid. I shouldn't have looked at your message, I have the strangest desire to get into a Pinto and drive crazy in stop and go traffic.

    Harry,

That spring failure sounds really bizzare. Considering the weight and outboard location of your car's continental kit, I would think it would stress the springs more than just loading the trunk. In addition to installing the springs you're getting from Bill, how about adding some air shocks or HD shocks with helper springs?

With all the discussion about radial tires stressing out stock rims, I was wondering if you were going to change them too. I guess when those discussions come up, I'm confused since stock rims withstood far more stress during NASCAR races. If the finances allow, have you given any thought to installing a set of quality used tires just to get you by so you can attend the meet?
