Whistleing Jet

I just got back from about a 70 mile round trip with my 53' Jet and i noticed that when I came to a stop I could hear a whistleing sound, then when I acclerated it would quiet down, it wasn't real loud. The car seem to run ok. It kind of sounds like it is sucking air somewhere. It has a new vacume line and I put a new intake gasket on it a while back. does anybody have any ideas???

Thanks, Barry Smedley

Sounds can travel. ...Could be belt or generator whine. Small vacume leak would be more at idling then when stepping on gas would change or stop whistle... Experiment by removing your line to notice the change.. check by squirting liquid along the gasket, carb, fittings, etc, while listening for changes in the sound .

Check that the carby is bolted down tight, and that the flange is not distorted. As it sits on a stack of heat shield gaskets, it could be in here somewhere - just enough to make a noise, but not bad enough to upset running. also re-check the manifold bolts for tightness. it could also be a dry generator front bearing or rear bushing. good luck,

    Geoff.

I had that problem once in a 6 cyl AMC. Turns out, it was a stuck intake valve. The carburator had been runing too rich and deposits had built up on the valve stems.
  • you could try using an un lit propane torch around questionable seals
and gaskets, the engine idle speed will change if its sucking propane
in somewhere. this method has worked really good for me in the past.
  • I checked the carb and it was a little loose, and checked the intake, re tightened it, drove it about 10 miles and didn't hear anything. maybe that got it. Thanks for all the advice.
