  • Hi Phil! It's phil, Sorry there's no one in the entire world that knows how to fix them. So stop checking to see if anyone knows. Although it sure is interesting to see what someone would write under a watson stabilizer thread! Chow
  • Give it a little while, Phil......Somebody will know something it may just take a little time. Remember, it just takes the right person to see your post, and He/She may be on spring break right now. If you mean Watson Steering stabilizer shock, You might check with "allworldautomotive.com" They list some but I don't know it they will be of use to you.

Phil, I'm not sure what year(s) of Hudson would use this device, but have you considered contacting directly the people who own these Hudsons? They have probably run into the same problem in having them rebuilt, and may have an answer.

As active as this forum is, it still doesn't have as many participants as the Hudson club has members, so there are a lot of knowledgeable people who aren't here to read your inquiry.

Take a look in your H-E-T roster (assuming you're a Club member) and locate some other owners of your year of Hudson, then send them a letter or e-mail. Or you might try contacting the person who maintains the registry for your year of Hudson (back cover of the WTN, I think). He or she may have some thoughts, and at the very least you may be able to get a list of fellow owners from that person.

Another place you can try, for an answer to this question, is the AACA's forum page. This stabilizer may fit other makes and models, and you could post messages in the different forums there as well. The URL is http://forums.aaca.org/ubbthreads.php

That's the tool Sherlock Holmes uses to keep his friend Dr. Watson from going nuts. It either looks like a pipe or a walking stick or a magnifying glass.

Some early type of shock absorbing system...

  • Wow, that looks like it could be an early type of tortion tube if they were mounted vertically. I am always impressed by some of the early inventions and what they eventually evolved into.

There are actually two types of these so called stabilisers, neither very effective. One type just has friction plates, and the other has a large torsion spring, which acts as a one-way rebound damper. Personally, I wouldn't even consider them, as I doubt that they were original equipment anyway. I use heavy duty lever action hydraulic shock absorbers on the front, and telescopics on the back. Much easier, and infinitely more effective.

    Geoff.
  • Dear Geoff, Is there an option? Different types of shocks available? In 28? Would you think they would be easier to get? They would be factory installed if selected other than the watsons? Lemme know,I sure want to go the easier way if It's OEM. Thanks, Phil P.S. Is this a bolt on operation?

Have you been here Phil ? Its more about the older Hudson and the folks that own and work on them. Good luck, Ron

1928's did not have shock absorbers as factory installed equipment, ao anything you add is going to be an improvement. I have been lucky enough to get lever action units at swap meets (for the front), but you can buy suitable short telescopics for the rear from Pep-boys or similar shops in the U.S. It is a simple job to make up suitable mounting brackest to fit under the spring clips.

Mr. Clark wrote an article in the March/April 2006 WTN on installing shocks on a early Hudson.

    Hi Phil,

Don't know if you're still in the market for info on the Watson Stabilators or not. In the current issue of Skinned Knuckles magazine they have an article on early shock absorber designs, including the Watson Stabilator. They make reference that the H.H Franklin Club Library has reprints of the Watson Stabilator Service Manual available for $27 that gives detailed procedures for rebuilding, and adjusting. According to the article you shouldn't try to open these up without the manual as a guide, since these units have a large spring in them that could cause damage to both you, and or the unit if the proper steps aren't followed.

The Franklin Club contact info is as follows: H.H. Franklin Club Library, 139 Blueberry Lane, Rutland, VT 05701

Hope this may be a help to you.
