1st time out with Supercharger...

Well took the PaceMaker out today with the supercharged 308 to see just what was going to happen. Problems came up with the electric shift solenoid on the first pass (hey it has worked flawlessly for 7 months and messes up today of all days).

It would not shift from 1st to 2nd gear at 4000 rpm so I shifted it manualy.

only problem was about 1/16th of a second later it decided to work and shifted into 3rd way, way too soon. I was going to run her out but it shifted

its self again into neutral at @ 1000 feet so I aborted the run.

tried to fix the solenoid and linkage but I need to go back and re-engineer everything to make it 100% right. I took the linkage off and decided to shift it my self to get a good run. Yea, right!

Second run was 4-1/2 hours later and all my budies that run superpro slowed

down a full 10th. I did a clean burnout, staged good but got into the converter a little too hard. it is stalling at 2200-2300rpm and feels good leaving but it started to spin the tires so I backed off the launch and missed the third bulb some. well ok, I missed it big time with a .204 light (.000 is perfect and the first light I had was a .009!).

with a launch under 2000rpm and a slower 60ft time from the previous run I did run 16.053 @ 85.5 mph. This is 1.7 seconds quicker than the best without the supercharger and no were near a good run. I shifted it at @ 4000rpm into second and third and ran it out the back door. this calcualted out to 180hp at the rear wheels and 214hp at flywheel. best last year was 133hp at the rear wheels and 157hp at the flywheel. this is a hugh improvement and I am happy but there is more hiding there.

the boost was showing 4.5-5lbs at 4000rpm but I think the belt is slipping a little bit as the boost gauge is jumping between the 4.5 and 5lb marks pretty violently. I think the pulleys are too smooth. the Studebaker guys here I know sand blast the grooves in their pulleys and see about 1lb of boost gain. they are running low 13's and high 12's that I have seen first hand with engines that are 100% stock and certified as stock for the muscle car drags in Michigan each year.

I am fully confident that there is another full second hiding in the present set-up. the launch was crappy due to driver issues (yep I messed it up), shifts are not consistant enough for good back-to-back comparisons and the boost is "jumpy" on the gauge. Jetting is rich but not too far off as it cleaned up some on the second run. I think just dropping 1 or 2 secondary jets would be right based on the temperature rise going down track is about what you normally want to see (rose 15 degrees and should rise 20).

Next week I will have the shifter worked out, pulleys sand blasted and the other little things I want to address fixed.

I'm not going to be satisified until I see a high 14 out of this combination. progress is good so far but there are gains to be had here.

later got work to do,

Fun stuff! What's that motor sound like @4000 rpm?

What kind of tires and pressure are you running at the rear?
  • well just picture this:

Open Clifford long tube dual outlet headers, no interior except the dash and bench seat, Randy Maas .402 lift 242 duration @.050 street cam that sounds like a big-block Chevy at idle.

it totally wails under boost at full throttle at 4000 rpm!

If those Banshees sounded like this to that Greek guy back 1000+ years ago I know why he had his self lashed to the mast buy his crew!

my ears are still ringing and its been 3-1/2 hours since I ran that last pass at ORP.

got to go, I think I have pripeisum (that 4 hour condition that you are suppose to see your doctor about)......

    later,

  • Good report PaceRacer50. You're going in the right direction. You'll get it sorted out. I've been doing this a long time now and still sorting. Not bad time slips for that 'little' cam. Finished three timing chains and two electro. dist. this week so I'll get back to the '41 this week.
