ok now im curious? i dont mean to pry but that is the wierdest
air filter ive seen i mean ive seen oil bath air filters an d k@n filters
and dry filters and metal shaveing filters wire mesh and eaven horse hair filters but what is that?!!! i recognize one half to be a oil bath
unit but what about the drum part and where did u find sutch a interesting pice of history?
the oil bath filter is about the coolest filter idea i have ever heard of, there is a chamber (correct me if im wrong) full of oil that grabs dust and other foren objects out of the air because the air flow
too the engine is right across the surface of the oil and then through oil soaked horse hair or metal curls or aluminum. and the best part is you never have to replace it, just give it a good cleaning in solvent "karosine" "terpintine" (ok i think i mispelled those) replace the oil and its good to go agan. why dont we use this idea anymore ? i mean if you were to buy a cheep filter today
it would be in a white box from? and its recycled out of car seats
and pocket lint and the stuff you find between your toes when you wear a pair of socks too long. is this better? well it sure is cheaper.0 -
If its Hudson at all I don't think its from a stepdown. Mine are similar but much shorter in length and don't have that hose connection on them. I think this is from another make of car or an earlier pre 48 Hudson?0
-
Pretty sure it's the optional aircleaner for a Hudson 8 cylingder model... yes step-down0
-
I've been around Hudsons most of my life (since the early 40's), and have never seen this exact air cleaner under a Hudson hood. They had a similar one, but much shorter in over all length (like the red ones shown in the picture above). This one is probably from a Packard or Chrysler product.

48-51 8 cyl with drivemaster or supermatic0
-
Nick S is right on. The air cleaner is just like the one on my 1950 Commodore 8 with Supermatic Drive. The only difference is mine is black and not that pretty blue of the one in question!0
-
Nick is correct, and as pointed out,the tube on the bottom is for the Drivemaster/Supermatic option. The air for this option is supposed to be filtered, that is what the tube is for.It fits a 2 bbl.0
-
That's the air filter I've been loking for! Geez, I'll bet it's going to be expensive after all of this discussion! 33tinar, PM me with your price.0

This looks to me like a prop from STAR TREK,
the Enterprise!0 -
that's sort of a hard to find air filter. I think I got one, i used the base on to complete a set of twin H oil bath air cleaners. I put in paper filters, and they made a difference, too. there's a cross reference number somewhere for these.
the 6 cylinder is different, if memory is correct, doesn't have the long tube between the canister and oil bath section0 -
Man You Guys are GREAT! My Dad said he did not know but I got it out of the trunk of a 51 or 52 Commadore 8 that had a hornet installed years ago. He has had the commadore 8 in his back yard for about 30 years. Thanks for the help! Danny Hill0

I'd be interested in buying it from you if it's not needed. I sent you a email.0 -

325-No,this air cleaner fits a 2 bbl carb..The oil bath option for Twin-H looks almost identical ,but has a smaller carb.diameter.This is much larger. What mounting bracket does your car have to mount them to the block?. I have seen a couple of different types.0 -
Well the fellow is now selling the aircleaner on eBay...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HUDSON-1948-49-50-51-COMMODORE-8-AIR-CLEANER_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ34198QQihZ013QQitemZ230241135622QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
I think the cleaner looks more like a BUICK 8 cleaner... 46-48 ...0 -
read the description, it is listed as fitting an automatic. While I guess in a general sense of things, this is partly correct, I doubt it is a correct aircleaner for a 51-52 equipped hydramatic car. Probably to be fully correct, you would still need to say the cut off is 48-50 supermatic/drivemaster, right?0
-
HK is correct.I think that the seller didn't really describe it properly-left out that it is dented badly around the silencer can, also should show the carbs that he mentioned as part of the deal. Some may also argue that you could still get Supermatic in '51,but I've never seen one. This also needs to have the bracket that goes with it. It uses bolts[or a double studded special bolt] that secures the water jacket to the block, that the bracket mounts to. If you have a pattern, the bracket would be very easy to make.0

This whole thread makes me feel like the guy just used to group to get enough info to list his air cleaner on ebay. I guess that's okay but I feel like the forum members were exploited somehow. No big deal really I just felt the members were trying to help someone get his Hudson original when in reality they were being used to get information for a sale of something that is being misrepresented to some extent.

I felt it was more like mining the group for information, but hey, you know what? in the end, it may end up in the hands of someone that needs this aircleaner. In the end, it's all cool. I wish he would have listed it more correctly, but if nothing else, he's making a hard to find part available.0 -
Initially, Hydramatic was not available on the '51 Pacemaker & Super series, but along about mid-year it was made available to all series, and SuperMatic was discontinued.

Well, there ya go. Nick has seen one,and I'm sure it is ultra rare. I sure didn't mean they because I hadn't seen one that they didn't exist !! It is about like the A/c I have read about recently in the Forum, offered on Step-downs,or P/S offered on anything except a '54. It's what's so cool about the Classicar forum. Some of the threads and conversations are priceless pieces of history that are shared with the WORLD.!!:cool:0

I am sorry some of you felt exploited for me trying to get the correct information to post this air cleaner for sale on Ebay. I guess next time I can list it just as a antique air cleaner and very few of you will ever know it was for sale. If I misrepresented this air cleaner some way please feel free to explain. I stated there was rust and dents, (I took a pic of the (badly dented )spot so you could plainly see it.(CLUTCH GUY) Actually I think that dent could be popped out. As far as stating it was for an automatic, I thought it was. The funny part of this is that I thought I would ask the experts on their website for some information and I get criticized for trying to profit from something that was on its way to the CITY DUMP, to never be seen again! The carburetors,
it was an after thought--- while listing the air cleaner on Ebay, I thought somebody might be interested in the 2or3 old carbs that were in the rusted down trunk where I had found the air cleaner. So I went back and dug them out of the trash can thinking that who ever needed the air cleaner might want the carbs. If your interested in buying the air cleaner than that is all you are bidding on. Ebay has raised the prices on nearly everthing but it has made everthing available for you to buy if you can afford it. I have two teenage son's and I have two car projects going on at one time. We are trying to raise some money to pay for our projects just like you guys sometime have to raise funds or save your money to fund your projects.Danny Hill0 -
Clutch Guy,thanks For Responding.there Is A Bracket That Comes Out From Behind The Oil Filter That Comes To A T That Appears To Fit Underneath The Bowl Under Each Air Cleaner.the Air Cleaners Fit On The 2 Carbs Fine & Seem To Fit On This Bracket.these Were In The Trunk Along With Another Air Filter That Looks The Same But Has A Longer Neck That Would Go Do To The Carb.my Dad's 54 Twin-h Has A Different Filter,i Guess Not Oil Bath.would Oil Bath Be Correct For 52 Club Coupe?thanks 3250

Well, I think you said plenty. I think that while, you listed it a bit off, I can't fault you for asking the group about it. I guess the only thing you might have done different, is perhaps said at the get go, that this thing is going to be put up for sale, when properly identified.
As far as your auction listing, here's what's wrong...
1) it is not for an automatic, it is actually for a car equipped with a stick overdrive transmission, that had an option, from the factory, that vacuum shifted the clutch thru a complex system. And specifically, this air cleaner is for an 8 cylinder variant.
2) That is not the original paint. It should have been black.
3) I think most specific, it should be listed for a 1948-1950 model year hudson, 8 cylinder, and while 1951 may be "correct" I doubt it.
I think the condition is fine. While dents on these, especially on the silencer canister (the bigger tube) suck, they can be fixed. I found using the (blue corral brand) self dent puller, the one that uses small discs you hot glue on to the surface, then have this wing affair that will pull dents, works real well. Let's face it, this one is saveable, and If I was looking, I think the price is fair.
In closing, don't blame these guys on here, I can see both sides of this argument, but really I guess I appreciate the fact you made it available, to the hudson community.
Take care, good luck with your auction, and yeah... can eBay get any greedier? wow....0 -
Why didn't you just offer it for sale here. These go for anywhere up to $100 depending on condition. I bought 4 in a box for $20 had to clean and repair for that. Here is your Hudson audience right here. I see you even had an offer here.0

Thank you for your comments. I was listing other things on Ebay and just didn't think about listing it here. You are right, this would of been the best place. I did not intend to offend anyone with my 1st question about the air cleaner. I hope in the end, someone will end up with it, that really needs it.Thank you. Danny::)0
