Hudson fibre timing gears!

I have two '56 tooth' fibre camshaft gears. I've only just discovered that they are slightly different. One is thicker than the other. The box for the thicker of the two says 1941 and 1942 Hudson and Terraplane 6 & 8 cyl. Does the thickness difference matter?

One is 1" thick, the other 7/8" thick. Both are 6.5" diameter.

I trust there is an expert out there who can identify them. Paul Dunningham.

Paul, you can't use either of these in your '39 Hudson. The'41 onwards gears are a different pitch, and will bind if used without the correct crank gear. The thinner one is for '32 --'35 models.

    Geoff.
  • Thanks Geoff, my Hudson has a later model 212 ci engine with the distributor mounted on the top of the motor at the rear. What year did they shift the dizzy position, was it 1940? Will that thick gear go on this engine? Paul.

Hi Clutch guy, I live in New Zealand and have had my '39 since 1971. I hope your Dad's old Hudson is still out there.

Thanks for replying.I think it would be safe to say that yours is not the car!! When he did that car,I learned a little more about '39's. The CC6 has a prettier interior than the CC8,in my opinion.I like the stripe material on the door panels and the seats better than the 8.The 8cylinder obviously runs down the road better than the 6. What ratio rear axle gear does yours have?.Do you know where it came from originally?.I am just curious:)

My 4 door Hudson six was sold new in New Zealand in 1939. It was built RHD in the USA for export . It was originally owned by the Kirby family who owned a ferry sevice in Thames [south of Auckland] and the car was used for transporting passengers to the hotels. I have just learned of a '39 Hudson coupe in the South Island of New Zealand.
