Vacuum Wiper Motors!

Paul, I've found the best product for these wiper motors is a Rob Ficken restoration job! Send it to him along with payment, and it'll work like new when you get it back. I've done the best I could on a few motors, but they never worked as well as when Rob gets finished with them. Well worth the cost. He's the master. http://www.wiperman.com/ (631) 587-3332 (NY).0

Had great results from Ficken as well, highly recommended.0

I woleheartedly agree, but in the meantime you might try sucking some neat's foot oil into the intake, sploosing it around inside, and letting it sit for a day or so. I'm told that's a leather seal inside and that it gets dry. Neat's foot oil will supple it up!
Also, just for grins, unhitch the motor from the drive mechanism (in my older Hudson there are rigid arms under the dash which can easily be detached; grope up there and realease the little figure eight spring thingy from each and slide the arms off their pivots on the back of the vacuum motor. Then try manually operating each of the two transmissions by wagging the arms back and forth. It it seems bound up, get in there with some oil and grease and make 'er smooth again. Specially those little chains and cogs that run up into the wiper transmissions. The smoother the whole thingamabob works, the easier will be the vacuum motor's task in the first place.0 -
Paul, Fickon wouldn't work on my make of vacuum motor, he only works on Trico motors, mine was an Ansco. So after searching for help and finding none I decided to rebuild mine myself. I took it apart, cleaned out all the old dried up grease and packed it and put it back together, what a simple job. The problem was the old grease just sticking everything together. I used a very light grease and now my motor runs like new. If your motor is a Trico motor there are quite a few people who work on them but don't be afraid to try it your self. I got great advice from the folks here on this forum and that gave me the confidense to dive in, just becareful of your gaskets when you take it apart.

i've always run brake fluid through mine and they worked like new.0

Yes it's an easy job to disassemble them , clean them out and put fresh grease in them. If the leather's dried out neatsfoot oil will fix it, then just use lubriplate, makes 'em work great!0

Harry, I've done exactly as you describe, and though the motor showed definite improvement, it was never as good as it should have been. Ficken has been able to restore "like new" performance.0

If he would have worked on mine he would have gotten it in a heartbeat. Mine was a brand he doesn't have parts for so I was required to do it myself. He was helpful with suggestions and I understand that the Ansco motors were OEM in only a few models. Mine now works as well as I've seen any vacuum motor run so I'm okay with having to do it myself. It seems a bunch of people bought out Trico stock when they could, I have no idea what happened to all the parts for the Ansco motors but in all the contacts I made no one has any parts. It was one of the easiest jobs I've ever done though.

Has anyone tried a "vacuum reserve tank" to keep the wipers going while accelerating? 54s used a vacuum tank to assist power brakes. I believe AMC used them as well (for Brakes?) Crane Cams sells one to compensate for their cams. http://www.cranecams.com/index.php?show=browseParts&lvl=3&prt=31.
I have a Tank (a coffee can with a plug/oneway valve in it) from a AMC but I havn't tried it yet.0 -
Daven, I plan on putting a vacuum reservoir tank on the Hash just for that purpose.
