Can we talk about HUdsons?
Wow, I made a promise to myself that I would spend less time in discussions, and more time talking about hudsons this year...
So, I just escaped from the land above, and need to generate some hudson talk....
Here's the latest...
What do you plan on doing with your hudson this year?
work in progress?
long trip?
first ride?
replace some parts?
rebuild project?
upgrade?
Let's share!
My project is to repaint mine. It is getting real shabby, after almost 17 years, since it was last painted, so I want to redo it, freshen it up, replace some window gaskets, meaning I want to pull the front and rear windshields, (on a 50, anyone got any advice?) get the OD working, replace tires, powder coat the rims (may run tubes with the rim/tire choice I make, any suggestions?) Put on the good chrome, just get it back into order...

Sounds like a 2-3 year project to me :D0

All I gotta say Kid is: 2009 BABY!!!
Plan 1, get my 50 P in good road warrior order and be at that 100 year party!
2. finish restoring my '47 C8 and have 2 fully restored Hudson's in my garage
3. use them as daily drivers. Attend every car show I can. Maybe Run Route 66 to CA.
4. Then maybe get persnickity and think about minor upgrades.
5. Go broke doing all of the above. LOL0 -
The 40 coupe is coming along..see it in Marleboro, the 52 Hornet is going in the Norwich, NY museum for a year, the 49 is gettin spiffyed up next winter/spring for a drive to Detroit for Nat09, the 36 Terrorplane will get driven once a week or so and the 47 Truck will get driven almost daily.0

#1 Getting myself psyched up for the 10 hour drive to San Jose for the Western Regional. I was going to do a partial rewire of the Jet before I go, but I spent an hour with a roll of black tape and things aren't so bare anymore LOL. In theory, I'd like to figure out my Hydramatic leak before the CA trip, but I'll probably just stock a gallon of fluid in the trunk for the trip. Working 6-7 days a week makes it tough to make for quality Hudson repair time.
#2 Put the old Jet radials on the '50 C6 - I just don't trust those 30 yr old Sears WWW's. After I figure out what the driveline noise is from, I'll get it licensed and listen to people ask when I'm going to restore it... (it would've fit in nicely at Viva Vegas just as it is now)
#3 Put a new convertible top on my not yet classic '91 LeBaron. It has 50K miles and the interior is like new, but the top is extremely dry rotted. I have the new top, just haven't had the ambition to do the job.
Sorry #3 wasn't Hudson related...0 -
I'm redoing my 54 wasp. Took out the tired 232 engine and stick non od transmission. Now I'm just about ready to drop in a 308 twin h with hydro transmission. Had to change steering columns, cut out the crossmember and switch to the removeable one, change front brake lines, repacked drag link, while I was at it I cut out the front floor pans and built new ones and put them in , once the motor is in then I have to do all the linkages. After I get it running I want to switch to 12 volts, put in Pertronix electronic ignition. After that I will most likely need to swap out the 410 rear end for a 307. Its taking a bit longer than a long weekend to do...lol But I will be driving her shortly, all the hard stuff is done.0

#1 ?
#2 ?
#3 Fly to the 2008 Nationals, meet some new folks, have a great time and hope the airlines are still in business. I can't wait, counting down.
#4 ?0 -
I'm shootin' a bit low this year.
I just want to get the McCulloch up and huffin' on the '49.
And drive, drive, then drive some more.
maybe convert the Wasp over to a progressive 2 barrel.
Somebody have a Pacemaker/232 single WA-1 linkage and coil bracket they'd part with?

At four bucks a gallon, I might make it to the regionals in Albq, NM in June...might!0

Howdy Hudsonkid
I'm new to the Hudson forum (thankyou Russell Chilton) but not new to hudsons by any means. I restored them with Jim Harmon in Oregon for 15 years before moving to San Antonio Texas. There was a 50 Hudson Commodore mock-up police car that sat about ten years in front of the old Selma Texas City Hall (it became the City Hall Grill restaurant) I've owned it now for about three months and every old car nut I speak with is familiar with it. My three year old boy actually OWNS the car so we have some time to restore it. We are keeping it as a police car because Ricky loves it as such and it is so well known and appreciated around here. I've even learned that since San Antonio is a tourist city with the Alamo that many out of state-rs even know about it. We'll be fitting it with Vintage Air soon and doing bits at a time
Good luck and have fun freshening up yours. I do stainless so let me know if you need me for that OK?0 -
This year, I'm shooting low too.
#1 - Get my 47 truck to my house (it's 650 miles away still)
#2 -Install seatbelts in the Pacemaker so we can more safely cruise around with the little ones
#3 - Get the truck in drivable condition (tune up, brakes, etc)
#4 - Take both to Pigeon Forge in October (not likely).
Work on my house will consume most of my free time this year.:( I also acquired a VW camper that I hope to use this summer for a few outings.
If I can get 3 out of 4 done this year I'll be happy.

I'm not going to paint the Hash, the paint is all original and though not cherry in fairly good shape.
Get some radials on the beast, the old bias plys are kind of rotted on the sides and they make me nervous at 80 mph, maybe I just worry to much now that I'm older.
Adjust the headlights, just got the replacement bucket springs from Bill A so I won't be blinding owls anymore.
Replace the door panels, some knuckhead must have used door panels from a Jet, they are about an inch too short of being correct.
Hopefully I'll have everything ready for the fall run to San Simeon.
Find a 49 C6 I can drive and restore at my own pace and be able to afford. I have a couple of extra vehicles to sell in order to do this but I want to do it this year.
I want to meet more Hudson people, make a meet or two.

My first National was Portland Oregon in 1989 just after I got my 1929 Hudson 4 door standardsedan. Met a lot of great Hudson folks then and still am. I talked with Jim Harmon in the Indiana airport a little leaving the Nationals and he said he was selling out ??? I understand he has a lot of 29 Hudson parts along with alot of other Hudson stuff. Nice seeing new folks here that know there Hudsons. Ron0 -
Hi Hudsonkid,
good idea for a post, I really like learning "How's your Hudson' from the board posters.
1. Deliver the 29 Hudson Victoria to its new owner in Florida.
2. Look up some HETers in Florida.
3. As I am 'HUDSONLESS, I need to find another one!
4. No doubt will need to work on new Hudson.
5. attending as many HET meets as possible
6. Plan and motivatiing, interesting and compelling tech session for the HUDSON ESSEX ERA cars at the National.0 -

Got a $ amount you could not pass up Sheldon ? Nice 29 you HAD there. Good luck, Ron0 -
Hey Ron, same here about the good hudnuts all over
Jim is selling out as much as possible but not entirely, he'll be keeping a lot of Hudstuff of his own. He's one of my closest friends. I look forward to hearing more from ya. I probably still know where more of his stuff is than he does since I'm mostly responsible for a good share of any organization he has. he has about 30 hoods, 50 doors, 75 fenders and just hordes of stuff but most is for step-downs
He does have some early stuff but most of it is buried, he could use some help organizing and identifying some of the older things.0 -
The Plan (for now...)
- 1950 Super 6 Roadworthy by my b-day in June (front disc, tires/wheels, new fuel system, trans?)
- Paint the 1998 crew-cab dually 4x4 July (anyone want to learn how to sand and paint as my apprentice?
)
- Chop the top and finish suicide doors on 49 Custom in August

Sheldon, if you want, we haven't had a poll in some time, we could "vote" for what Hudson product you get next... if you're game on the idea... you just have to accept what we vote for!
I'm thinking either a hash, or a jet, for my vote, but they need love too!
If you are jonesing for working on one, in the meantime, let me know, looks like from what I saw, your's was pretty nice, and mine could use some of that attention to detail..0 -
:)This year I hope to find new homes for three Hudsons. A '50 Commodore Coupe that is rough but has potential, a '49 Super Six Sedan that is a driver and would be a decent car with some tlc and time, and lastly, a '41 Traveller tudor Dedan that is pretty much complete and a good restoration candidate. I will get my '37 out and drive it, I will put turn signals on it, have the gauges repaired and hopefully a new coat of paint, right now I am waiting for the carburator to be rebuilt. Then I hope to drag my '49 Coomodore Sedan into the shop and give it the attention that it needs. I have had this car since 1970 and drove it till about 1995 when a rod decided to make an exit. The car has been sitting since. I plan on instaling a 308 with hydromatic in the '49 and a higher geared rear end. It will be a two year project at best, at least the car will be back on the road. Hope everyone gets their plans accomplished this summer. Have a Great Hudson Season! Arnie M.0

I know: Sand the Floor, Paint the Fence and Wax ON/Wax Off a car.
Did not know Paint Off Car and Paint On Car were available.0 -
My Hudson list:
Get wiring safe and functional
Tweak things as needed to pass inspection and be road worthy
Drive it
Winter Plans:
Remove seats and floor coverings
Wire brush interior floor
Repair interior floor as needed
Seal and paint interior floor
Remove, Clean, Restore, Reinstall Rear Springs
Remove, Clean, Restore, Reinstall Gas Tank
Bench Projects:
Purchase 50 Pacemaker Rear end (Functional yet inexpensive)
Clean and Restore "new" Rear end
Install "new" Rear end0 -
Pacemaker, I think if I was going to rebuild a rear end I would look at putting rear discs on at the same time. As long as there is no hurry at least. I don't know if it would be a fun project but it sure would make for a better stopping car.

2008 plans are to:
Attend Doc's meet next month
Finish putting the 4 barrel and headers on the Wasp coupe that I took apart last year, including 4 new motor mounts
Pull the body off the 40 Chevy coupe (it's loose and I built a gantry last year). Strip the frame and install 57 Chevy rear and M2 front suspension. Install complete 49 Olds V-8 and hydro and have the body back on by year end.
Attend Spring Carlisle, York Street rods, KKOA lead sleds near Gettysburg, Fall Carlisle and Hershey, and the local Hudson get together after Hershey in Carlisle.
Obviously if "Hudsonkid" plans all this work on his car, it could impair progress on my plan.0 -
Hudsonkid needs to put things on hold while he helps Hudsondad. Spend less time doing polls and more helping Hudsondad. See the trend? Get Hudondads projects finished, then go back to playing.

I think we ought to do a poll on this suggestion!!!! Great idea!0 -
1) Install an OD
2) Replace center point steering pin and bearings
3) Enter more shows!0 -

Only if I get another Hudson. This one is going to stay as OEM as possible until parts are no longer available.
My next Hudson will be modernized with AC, power windows & locks, XM radio with cd....Will still be Hudson motor, but maybe modern automatic transmission.0 -
10) Finish rebuild of my '29 Essex engine (once I find new pistons !!!)
2) Install an O/D on my 28 Essex Coupe
3) Complete negotiations to purchase '38 Terraplane Coupe0 -

Sam, the job you and Mary Ann do on the WTN makes it still the best, most highly anticipated mail I (and many others) receive! So, how's that next issue coming along? (just kidding)
On my '49, all I need to do this weekend is to put the back wheels on, change my oil, and drop it off the jackstands and it's ready for the road. Next weekend is Spring Jefferson here in Wisconsin, which officially kicks off the 'old car season'! Hope it's not a muddy, cold mess like it is most of the time.
For more Hudson time, now I just need to get my dang lawn raked up, the last of the snow should melt by tomorrow!0
