Blade Assy-Fan #305153

What is the engineering reasoning behind the fan blades being on approximately 60-120-60-120 degree angles?

Are there "modern" blade assemblies that can fit the 1948-1952 engines that are 90 degrees?

Also what is the engineering reasoning behind the blade angle?

My thoughts behind this are that Hudson was 10-20 years ahead of everybody. Yet this 60-120-60-120 design was not "copied" by the other manufactures and has nto carried in the modern times.

Actually, I think you will find that a great number of later model cars did use the offset blades, following Hudson's example. something to do with harmonic vibrations I believe. In 1954 the ends of the blades were curved back slightly, which shifted just as much air, but ran even quieter. Nowadays of course most cars are fitted with electric fans, which are usually multi-bladed, up to 12 blades.
  • Thanks, guys. I knew some one would know.

I was painting the blades before I put them back on. That is when the pattern stuck in my head.

Now, if I can only find the lab test data and notes. I want to plug them into a CAD program.

Does the HET Store sell the old engineering data?

  • Yes, it is a bit much. Maybe I should have posted a warning to go along with that link. :D
