Small World....long....

So, the last couple of days, me and my hudson haven't been getting along. I have since started on the efforts towards repainting it, and got all of my supplies in order to work towards that goal. In doing so, I want to do some sandblasting, and needed sand. So I asked hudsondad, if I could come get a bag of sand, and thought that taking a quick drive over in the hudson would be fun.

WRONG... It drove there fine, getting home was the other adventure...

I went to start it up, and it started, sputtered, and died. This happened a few times, until it finally came to life. I figured it was just some fluke, and proceeded to venture home. Well, it didn't make it that far, that it left me sitting, carrying on even more, until it wouldn't run at all. Initially I thought it was out of gas, and had hudsondad bring me a few gallons, but that wasn't it. We limped it back to their house, and it seemed to be running okay, so I told him that I was going to make a run to try and get it home.

Well, I got about 3/4's of the way there, and had the hudson stumble and cough, and backfired so bad, initially, I thought it blew up. I ended up blowing up the muffler, and it is now quite loud, but it is at my house.

Hudsondad is thinking there's a problem with the carbs, so I guess I will finally rebuild them, much to what I previously planned...

Anyway, this is truly going somewhere, and here's the connection...

I went to work that night, 3rd shift, and shared my adventure with the security guard, on my way in. Older gentleman, probably early/mid 60's. He takes a great interest in my hudson, and finally I figured out why. He asked me if mine was a local car, and I told him the history of it, right back to the dealership in Lancaster where it was sold, how it was originally on the showroom floor, and the original owner. Funny, he told me the same person that originally owned my car was in fact, his uncle.

  • Kid, it sounds like you have a float sunk in the carb.

  • IF you've never cleaned the gas tank that's where to go. The symptoms you describe are typical of crap floating around in it . YOu could try running it from a 5 gallon can to check . Carbs don't usually run good sometimes and sometimes not. Bud
  • The only time I ever blew a muffler apart was when It got so loaded up with raw gas ( from trying to push start it, and a stuck float ) that when it did fire it blew the muffler off the car.
I would certainly check the plugs to see if they were fouled by fuel.

  • Yeah, I think the carbs are coming apart. The tank was dropped, and sealed the other year, it was decent then, as it was 14 or so years, before when I did it prior. Problem is the car was running great before this happened, last year, and up to now.

Not to say you don't have a carb issue as well but this sounds more like an ignition problem, perhaps a loose wire. Regardless something let raw gas out to the exhaust.

As I recall you were doing O.D. work recently, did you wire in the kickdown? Considering the interup nature of the kickdown I wonder if the problem could be in that portion of the circuit.

And don't worry, blowing up the muffler was the best thing I did for my exhaust of course it removed a few years from the life expectancy of my neighbors dog. though I didn't realize a 100lb dog could jump 8 feet backwards starting from a laying position.
  • I was thinking about the OD wiring as well, I pulled the connector at the relay, when it was sitting, but if memory serves correct, it still doesn't completely isolate the ignition tie in to the OD system. You might have a good point, Nick.

I guess either way, it wasn't like I was going to drive it to Doc's this year, anyway. haha... what an adventure that would have been... 5 mile trips turn out the way they do, imagine that distance...
