Hudson Jet Heater and Water Valve

Was the heater core/case intended to be a throw away unit, rather than repairable? Not that I'm repairing that part of the Jet at the moment, but I'm just curious because I've read the Mechanical Procedure Manual and found nothing on the heater. I've also read all the Hudson Service Merchandisers from '52-'54 and the closest thing to the heating system I found was a brief note on the Weather Control Water Valve and that was just a mention of the change in the capillary tube placement on that part. I guess I just find it strange that all the manuals I've looked at to date go into so much depth on all the systems except this part. Perhaps there'd be some more info in the parts number book?

Sara - I have not been able to find any service illustrations on any of the Weather Control units, even in the 1948-1954 master parts book. They did however, have a complete listing of parts for these systems therein.

The instructions and illustrations on the Weather Control units were incluced in the Weather Control kits that dealers used install heaters in cars that weren't built with a heater. Just like infomation for radios were part of the radio kit. In those days, heaters and radios were considered accessories and not incluced in repair manuals.0

I actually do have a copy of "Instructions for Operating Your Hudson Weather-Control" pamphlet, however it's rather generic information that in short says keep your cowl vent open and slide your blower and/or temperature levers to the left or right to accomplish desired setting. I was hoping to find more specific info on the heating unit itself.0

Sarah, The fact that this part is so rarely discussed has been curious for many of us over the years. If you think thats strange, try looking for the wiring diagram for it in your owners manual! For some reason{Hudson Reasoning sometimes a strange phenom} they were considered an option and as such were not considered part of the big picture. The vast majority of Hudsons built from 48-54 had heaters, heatercontrol valves{ Ranco} and the nesessary plumbing, but little or no reference is made to it. If that was Hudson's reason, then why do they include turnsignal wiring when that was more of an option than a heater? That wiring IS included in the owner manual wiring diagram yet the heater isn't . Go figure. As an aside, your heater is the same exact size and dimension as a stepdown heater.The big difference is the orientation of the copper stub lines going into the heater. The stepdowns were all laying horizontal and the jets were all vertical. Don't throw yours away. They can be soldered and repaired if necessary and they arent making any more of them.0 -

If you happen to take your complete heater out, make sure you mark all the cables to show where they go. I didn't, and it took a whole afternoon just to try to remeber where which cable went where.
