Keeping (OLD) title while getting a new one
Thanks for all the help on my last thread guys, your'e the best. Here's another wall I've come up against. The title for my 28 Hudson is 54 years old, itself a collectors item. The person who sold the car to me doesn't want to bother applying for a replacement of lost, so I ultimately would be able to keep it. That course would have been the easiest way to accomplish what I'm finding out to be, a feat. I went the course of checking on companies that will issue titles for cars that have none. 148$ and ten to twelve weeks (if they find no records in your state. I don't want to wait that long and maybe find it's on record anyway. Motor vehicle is a bunch of robots (I'm sorry but that's just the way it is, we have to send the old one to trenton and then they destroy them), that is if someone working there in that department doesn't go(hey this is neat, a title from 1954, cool, I'll just tell them I destroyed it and I can bring it home to put it in my collection. So I'm just putting out some feelers to see if anyone has another (quick) idea, yes I already thought of copying it and giving that to them and I probably could do a real good job(embossing with an old typwriter letter by hand, I could probably emboss the seal pretty good to but, on the chance of getting caught(big trouble) I withdrew that idea. Anyway, any ideas? anyone? I really would like to keep this title with the car. Makes for good showing. But I want to drive it more. It's almost ready for the road, Thanks Phil

Probably only a Person from NJ can advise, but in Pa I would Register the Car (with just a notorized 'Bill of Sale' with VIN # and Purchase Price, or appraised Tax Value from previous Owner) along with the VIN # Number 'Tracing' since the DNV probably would not have Records on a '28 Hudson. (I would register as if the Title was actually 'lost' then keep the original Title)...Perhaps contact your local Notorary Services or the AAA for more advice on Registering an Antique Car with only a Bill of Sale rather than DNV.0

You may want to check with your state's DMV. Many understand the historical significance of original titles and will cancel the old title (in favor of a new, replcaement title) and return it to you.0

I just went through this on a 37 Terraplane title in Florida. The car was purchased by my grandpa in 1966 & I had that title. The DMV counter lady could not understand why I would even want the old title back. I was told there was nothing they could do & the title would not be returned- but I would get a new one 7-10 days.0

What is this world coming to when they treat a historic document like an old piece of paper. likethe gas prices, it's incredibly disgusting. Phil0

You might consider talking with some of your buddies in other states that might be willing to help you out. For instance, I know in Kansas for vehicles as old as yours (I don't know the cutoff year), a resident can walk in and get a title for a vehicle w/out one already rather easy, just with a bill of sale. The mid-western states (least populated) might be your best bet, and just treat the car as if it doesn't have a title at all.0

You are absolutely correct about Kansas. As long as your car is 1949 or older, all you need is a bill of sale and about $15. They don't even look at the car. 1950 and later, you need a special bill of sale and it has to be inspected. You DO have to show proof of insurance at the time you get the title though.0
