Useing the 37 212 block, the cam and dist of course are differant in the later dist at the back engines. Can the crankshaft in particular and any other parts be used from the later 212 on the early version with the dist on the side? Thanks for any info Bud

Bud, according to the parts books you can use any 212 crank through '47. That's about as good as it gets!

The valves are different stem size, but you can use the guides and valves from the later engines. Cam gears are different pitch, and can be transplanted as matched pairs. Cam bearings are different o/d, and later engines used no shims in either mains or rods, so the main shells may not be suitable. Otherwise heads and gaskets are the same, water pump, lifters, and fule pump wil interchange.

  • if the crank can be used - then what about the main bearings, I would think they could also be used. Thats a question.

That one kinda throws me also. So would you have to use later conncting rods ? What would you do then about all the bearings ? Bud

Without checking the parts books, I would think that if the cranks were shown as interchangable, one could safely assume the main and rod journal widths and diameters were the same.

The journals are all the same diameter right through, and you can use the rods fine, but as I said before, they eliminated the shims from the mains in the later motrs, so the main bearing shells may need filing down at the butting edges if you are using the later ones in a '37 block. In '37 and earlier they used .021" thickness of shims between the cap and block.
