Broken Hood Release

I received the following from a club member this morning, and am posting it here for input as I'm facing a similar situation with my '51 Commodore 6 Coupe:

I’m hoping that you or someone you know can help me with a problem. The hood release cable on my Hollywood snapped and of course, now I cannot open the hood and therefore will not drive the car any distance..

Everything seems to be behind a shroud. I can see and reach the cable thru the grill, however I cannot pull it hard enough to release the primary latch and the end of the cable that attaches to the latch is behind a shroud. What a dilemma!

I am an optimist, however, This must have happened before to someone. Any suggestions??
