OK all,

I was just out starting my truck and I broke the pinion gear on the Bendix. Is there a replacement that I can pick up at some place like NAPA. And how hard is it to replace?

Thanks

Aaron, Geoff gives good advice. Those people in Oklahoma that advertise and sell on Ebay are first class. I just bought one for my 49. Make sure you get one for 48 and up if you have a stepdown. There is a difference and they are not interchangeable. If you should find an earlier version, 47 and back, you can use just the gear by popping the loclk ring off. The gear portion IS interchangeable. It might be worth checking a local auto electric shop. Often they have old stuff on the shelf. Lots of farm tractors still out there using similar parts. Good luck.

P.S. Make sure your starter shaft isn't bent. That will ruin a new gear in a hurry!

Lance, the old Louis Backhus interchange book says the standard-shift stepdown starter is same as '37-'42 Ford. Also lists Accurate Parts #3-502 (rebuilt item), Delco1885103, Standard Products SDN141. Not long ago a post here said the Tractor Supply Corp (TSC) stores have the drives, as they were used on Ford tractors, type 8N or 9N.

    Thanks all.

Park, I have seen the Ford tractor ones on eBay and they are listed as CCW. I need a CW correct?

Lance, I don't recall how they designate CW or CCW. If viewed looking from the rear of the car or the starter, yours would be CW. The Hydramatic cars are CCW.
  • Lets consider this a bit. If your starter mounts in FRONT of the flywheel you would need it to rotate ccw to turn the engine cw. Just the opposite if mounted BEHIND the flywheel. Correct ? Bud

Interesting comment Bud, another thing to worry about now.

Park, NAPA could not cross reference the Delco part number you have listed. Do you or anyone else have a number? The engine is a '52 308

OK, Napa asked me to bring it in to match it. There is a retaining ring on the back. Is this how I take it off the shaft?
  • Lance, First I would remove the starter from the engine. There is a hole in the end of the armature shaft and in the end of the bendix that a roll pin holds them together. remove the wire ring around the bendix just behind the spring to remove the pin. Believe thats the way.

Standard no longer makes the SND-141. However, if your starter is a Auro-Lite MCH-6107, Standard offers the SDN-55 drive for it. NAPA offers a rebuild under BK 6561085.
  • Lance - my starter threw its gears one day parked right in front of the busy post office. Those flatbed tow trucks take up a lot of space! I pulled the starter and headed for my local starter/steering box reconditioner. Turned the starter around in about 4 hrs for $80; ended up with a genuine Bendix unit. Surely there's an auto electric in Alhambra /El Monte.

PS - SoCal picnic is June 8, at Ernest C Debs regional park.

OK all, thanks for your help. Got it rebuilt and fired off!

mars55, just a note; NAPA BK 6561085 rotates the opposite direction. When they had it delivered to the store I had the old one and compaired, glad I did. Also it had a key way not a through hole for a dowel pin. But they could not find the right number so I took it anyway. I took it apart and used the parts I needed.

Thats the trouble with cross-referencing parts errors will creep in. Looks like the Standard SDN-55 as a key way too. Just to check this do you have an Auro-Lite MCH-6107 starter?

mars55, I'll back it out tomorrow and take a look at the tag and let you know.
  • You can mix several different starter housings and armatures so the only sure way to know what you have is take it apart.
