Clutch will not accept fluid
hey guys. I hope someone can help me once again. I downloaded a lot of info from the web and I'm trying to use as much as I can till I get stumped.
i'm having trouble putting fluid in my 28 Hudson single plate system. The info says to remove a cap screw from the rear cover plate and I'm assuming (any) of the 8 screws will work as they didn't specify, then fill with 1/8th pint blaa blaa and 1/8 pint blaa blaa. now I'm using dexron for now as my clutch plate is frozen to the fly wheel. Well I made a fixture in order to feed the clutch and the fluids not moving, and of cource I'm filling it because when I removed a cap screw from the six oclock position nothing ran out. So where does the oil go from a sealed system? Is 1/4 pint really all you need to fil the clutch? I even removed another cap screw thinking it needed a vent hole to allow the fluid to flow. I talked to Dave Kostensek and (before either he or I knew there was no fluid),he said to add a cup of laquer thinner into the fluid to help loosen the gum a little and the clutch may break free easier, but I can't add anything. Are the filler holes plugged up? Then what. Do I inevitably have to pull it apart. I'm looking for any way to make this work without disassembling. Once again any help would be greatly appreciated. Phil

Not sure about your Hudson but on my 29 there is a plug that has a 3/8 " square hole that a 3/8" extention and ratchet will undo. Its in the front of the fly wheel and I only have one. Put at the 6 oclock to drain and at about 3 oclock where your timing hole and timing marker is to fill. Ron0

Thanks Ron, but I checked that as I had gone back through the older threads and found that mentioned. There is no drain on the front of my flywheel. Phil0

click on the link to Doug Wildrick's website in my signature post. He will be the best person to help you. I suggest you either call him, PM him here, or e-mail him, and he will get you moving in a positive direction. Chances are if it is frozen and will not accept fluid, I bet it may have to come apart to be serviced, because all the corks aren't gonna release nice, it's a ticking time bomb of a failure waiting to happen. I wish you the best.0

Phil, this what the inside looks like on a 29. I would assume that the 28 looks the same. I have circled the drain plug. The plug would be down to drain , and you fill through the timing window. I would go out take off the flywheel pan and take a picture of the front, but that would be more effort than I planned on at 9:00 at night. : )0

Hey, I hope Phil thanks you Aaron... not many people on this board would go out, and pull the transmission, pressure plate and clutch on their 29, to help a member visualize the situation. Especially at 9:00 PM... That my friend, is awesome. I wish you had a stepdown!
Take care guys!

What else do Hudson folk do at 9:00?
Actually see if you can figure out from the following picture, what I do after 9:00.0 -
uhhh.... hmmm...
hehe... good for you!!!! next to working on my hudson, there's only a few things I enjoy doing more....
cool picture!!!!0 -
The cap screws go in to a blind hole, so there is no way you will get the fluid in there!!!! The filler plug is in the back of the assembly (pressure plate) in the '28 models, so disregard Aaron's post, as the '29's had in the front of the flywheel. The filler plug has a recessed square hole, and you need a square tool to fit into this to remove it. Good luck,

accop--Phil, What a beautiful picture. Hope my flywheel surface is in good shape. I'm trying dearly to save the clutch system to try to maintain an original shape status, but as we all know the older they are the harder it is keep that status. New tires, brake shoes, hoses, clutch plate and resurfacing, I guess if they're all the right material. Proper make tires and all, Then it might not matter much if these items were necessary to get the car (working-to drive). Anyway, I've found through cutaway pictures that the flywheel on my car has no outer bolt holes and, there's a housing for the clutch that rises 2 in. in from the edge also, the housing edge is 2-2 1/4 up from the flywheel edge as one piece like a small frying pan. The pressure plate fits into the housing the back of which seals the housing. On the back of the plate is a (cover pipe plug) maybe I can put fluid through ther to loosen everything up. Looks like if you could throw it, take a pic, you'd have an early flying saucer. We'll thanks for letting me bend you're ear and, thanks for you're effort to help me. Talk to ya soon! Phil0

Dear geoff, I agree with you I see the drain plug but, why in blazes would this repair manual tell you to fill a blind hole especially when the same picture shows the plug? I'm going to grind down a 3/8 ratchet to fit. Hudson nut adamently told me to fill the cap screw. What da? Thanks geoff. Phil0

Phil, take some pictures of it. I would love to see the differences in the 28s. Pictures are worth a thousand words.
Geoff, everytime you post, I learn so much!0 -
You got it AK Post them real soon. Phil0
