i am looking at buying my first hudson. it is a 1950 2-dr super six. the bottom is pretty rusty. it runs, and drives and the interior is in good shape (in need of serious cleaning). looks to be all there, but not sure how to verify for structural damage. i have been reading about these and the unibody construction. how do you knwo when it is a parts car and when it can be salvaged? i can pick it up for about $1500. any advice?

thanks,

scott

    Scott,

It sounds like a pretty fair deal. I would definitely make sure that none of the rust is into the frame. Do you have any Hudson club members near you who could check it out for you? You don't want to get into having to do major structural restoration, it is not worth it. You may have to pass this one up and pay a little more for a car that is sound.

If it runs and drives and is mostly there - 1500 is probably fair given what you've outlined about the rust.

There are obvious areas around the trunk, and rear perimiter frame rails that you can see from looking around.

Whether you've got structural issues is tough without seeing it - and sometimes not until you have a problem or tear it down for a restoration.

I'd say the biggest issue with rust is if you have to pay someone to fix it - paying shop rates for rust repairs can add several thousand dollars (and significant time) to a restoration of any level.

Go in with your eyes wide open - you'll still come out smiling because it's a Hudson :D

Either a two door sedan or a coupe may be valuable enough to do a frame repair. I will be in Romulus the middle of June and I will have a morning free if you can wait that long.
