1948 Derhem Limo Hudson Forsale!
I had a wonderful and once in a lifetime automotive experience yesterday. I and about 15 others had a private tour of the Art Astor car collection in Anaheim, Ca. His warehouse contains over 235 perfect cars. All either unrestored, low mileage survivors or ground up restorations. Art himself gave us a three hour intimate tour.
He owns three Hudsons and all three plus many others are being auctioned off on June 27-29th.
The three Hudsons are a 46 Super-Six Convert, the Famous 1948 Derham Limo and a 53 Hornet Coupe- all three are excellent.
Auction estimates (RM Auctions) for the Limo are $50- 70K (seems low to me) and 60- 80K for the Hornet.(seems high to me). Super-six was 40- 60K (has a small block Ford. There is also a 57 Hash Hollywood Hornet avail. Here is the link.

It was and incredible collection of rare and desirable cars. I took both my boys who are 10 and 12. They got bored after the first 30 minutes but they still understand what a special treat this was.
They are also auctioning off a ton of automobilia, restored gas pumps, etc.
If I ever won the lotto, this would be mine!

I remember the Derham, I got a ride in it when it was John Seggady's. Neat car.0

Bent Metal, you must of been 10 to 15 years old then. There should be some picturs of the work that John did on the restoration. VicTor0

To all you guys, What do you think the limo is worth?0
-
Same as a '48 Commodore 8 with a phantom top and custom interior. LOL
Seriously though without the historical value (which is known but not positively documented) I think the interest in that car is mostly within the Hudson community so I wouldn't peg it higher than 50 K0 -
Wasn't there an article in the earlier version of the Hemmings Classic Car magazine about this car?0

It is a one-off, stand alone car. Harold gave some of us a ride in it when he lived in Kenosha. I sold him a '51 C8 sd. in perfect unrestored condition so he could put the Derham body onto an unrusted frame. I know he never did it & not sure if John did either. I saw it at the guy's place in Hemet who got it from John & it had a wonderful restoration.
I believe of the 3 Derham limos it is the only one with a dividing glass window. The front seat is fixed & only a small man can comfortably drive it - it's leather.
Like anything unique it is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.0 -
I thought that their were three? One went to Mrs. Roy Chapin?
Victor, yeah, about ten years old.:D0 -
Yes, 3 were made, the '48 for Mrs. Chapin, a '51 C8 which last time I heard was in Wisc., and the '53 Hornet built for the last Pres. of Hudson which I believe is in the Henry Ford Museum.0

The one built for the Hudson President, A. E. Barit, is on loan from the Henry Ford to the Ypsilanti Automotive Herritage Museum, Hudson Sales & Service display in Ypsilanti MI. Interesting, this car was acttually built as a '51, then updated at the factory to '52 and then again '53 trim. It too has a divider window between the rear passenger area and the driver's compartment. Front seat is black leather, and rear is finished in a lite tan broadcloth. The car looks great with it's chrome wire wheels and shinny black finish with the leather covered top.

It can be viewed here at Jack Miller's http://www.ypsiautoheritage.org/gallery2.htm0

I've never seen the Barit Derham but understand it was in pretty poor condition at one point as was Harold's.
The '51 appeared at at least one HET National & belonged to an HET member in Wisc. - not sure if he still has it or not.0
