    How did they survive back then without bumpers, seat belts and airbags ~ because according to the Gov. you surely wouldn't be safe without them :)

    That is probably Sequoa or the coastal redwoods, there are no trees that size in Yosemite!!

    They didn't survive, most of those people are now dead so in the end the government was right. Teach those scalliwags to ride around without seat belts. If those cars would have had 5 MPH bumpers they would have sustained about $6000 in damages from a front end collision, since very few of the cars were worth that much they weren't feasible until cars started to cost more than $10,000. So the government was wise beyond our scope of knowledge in waiting to make us safe until we could afford it.

    Not So!! This tree and many many others just a large were in the Maraposa Grove just outside Yosemite Valley. The "drive thru tree" was a popular attraction until 1971, when it fell in a winter wind storm.

    I stand corrected. I thought that the only "drive through" tree was on the coast?

    I used to be a Park Ranger in Yosemite. That was the Wawona tree, which fell in 1969, due to 4,000 pounds of snow on it from one of the most intense winters in memory.There are several Giant Sequoia groves in Yosemite, with the Mariposa grove being the largest. The Grizzly Giant,( Which is still alive) in that grove is much larger than the Wawona tree. The coast redwoods are taller , but the Giant Sequoia's are buch larger in girth and board feet. The 2009 Western Regional is in Oakhurst California, which is only 32 miles from The Mariposa grove in Yosemite.That woulld be a good side trip . There is also another grove, The Nelder Grove which is less than 15 miles from Oakhurst.
