Hi everyone---I have a rebuilt (with current materials) double action fuel pump to fit 37 thru 39 Hudson that I am not going to use because of the stiffness of the arm. P.M. me if interested. Not cheap. Cliff Minard.

I'm curious, Cliff: how do you know it's overly-tensioned? (Not challenging you, but maybe others ought to check tension before installing.)

Steve Sessions (legendary Hudson Eight guru from Long Island) once told me he never used the double actions because they (all) wore down cam lobes. No one else has ever said this. I wonder if the tension has something to do with wear?

Do you have any further light to shed on this subject? Others may be considering the dual-action pumps because of course they help your wipers to actually work when driving uphill in a rainstorm!
  • What Steve may have left out of the converstaion is the Double action pumps with LAMINATE arms will wear out the cam lobe which drives the fuel pump. Those pumps with the cast arms do not "...eat up..." the cam lobes. This applies to all Hudson engines.

Hi Jon---After looking on e-Bay for years & finally finding one with the correct arm & then purchased & sent it out for rebuild, I am now afraid to use it because the arm is so stiff that I fear it may wipe the cam lobe. It does not have the laminated steel arm mentioned by WildWasp. I do appreciate hearing Steve Session's comments regarding it which merely fortified my thinking. Hope to see you & the Terraplane at the National. Cliff Minard.
  • Hudson 8....

The tension on the fuel pump arm is dictated by the rating of the arm spring used in the pump. The pressure of that spring can be adjusted through removal and replacement. The correct spring values are posted as part of the fuel pump rebuilding instuctions and can usually be found in books like the ALDENS, Chilton specialtiy books and possibly the Hudson manuals... although I do not know the later as I do not have manuals of that vintage to reference.

    Good Luck
