Hudson Salesmans book

My mother in law is doing an estate sale and found a ton of interesting memorabilia in this guys basement. Amongst all the political signs and buttons and banners she found a hudson salesmans book for model year 1938. this looks complete in a zippered leather binder that includes a couple copies of the "Hudson News" from July 1938. There is also 5 blank envelopes from the Varalli garage that have the hudson logo on them.

Flipping through (very gently of course) there is a Hudson Booklet that dealers would have shown potential customers that featured the Terraplane, six, and eight. it is full color and it shows all features and options available (including a hudson innovation for 1938, battery under the hood!!). there are paint chips, a book comparing the hudson to various other ford, chevy, pontiac, packards, etc. Next there is "accesories by hudson" that includes deluxe heaters, spotlights, cigarette lighter, etc. Hudson Radio Sales manual for 1938. some technical bulletins dated 10/26/37. a few smaller things like a neat competitive comparisons pull-out chart that allows you to directly compare the hudsons to such cars as the Ford 60, chrysler imperial, pontiac 8, etc. and an order booklet with blank space for desired options, trade in value of other cars, money down and so on.

This seems like something that a collector would love to add to his/her collection. The leather binder has a bit of damage and the zipper is torn but the rest of it looks like it hasn't been touched in 70 years. the paper is yellowing. the cardboard with the paint chips on it looks like it got stuck together at some point but it is only about 1" x 1/4".

i have no idea of how much something like this is worth. It just seems to unique to let it go for $10 at an estate sale. I'm not looking to get top dollar i just want to make sure it gets into the hands of someone who can really appreciate it. Does anyone have any ideas on what i can do with this? I can take pictures if someone wants to see something.

Thanks for reading this long post

  • Books like this usually start at $100+ and move up from there depending on condition. I would put it on eBay and see how it does, certainly worth more than $10.

Ebay would definitely be the way to go on this, plus anything else you spot in that estate sale that even "seems" to be worth more than the proverbial $10. You could also pick a price ($50, $75, $100), advertise it in the Hudson Club's magazine, and then add "or best offer" to your price. That way, if no one is willing to give what you want, you'll at least get an offer.

I can give you information on how to list the item at no cost in the magazine. However, since the magazine is bi-monthly, you won't get the quick response that you would on Ebay.

  • Thanx for the replies. I agree that ebay is going to be my best bet. I wasn't sure if there was a market among enthusiasts for something like this.

this man was a political memorabilia collector and there are hundreds and hundreds of signs, buttons, bumperstickers, and any other propaganda used during polical campaigns. I found a stack of "Kennedy for president" bumperstickers that are the same ones as on display at the Kennedy museum. Nixon posters that measure 5-6' tall. Unused invitations to inaugurations from the 60's and 70's. It would be very profitable, im sure, to spend the time posting it all one by one on ebay, but there is so much it would take months... this guy wants it gone before July.

anyways, thanks again for the input. If you know anyone who might be interested im going to try and put it on ebay this week. i think i'll use a similar title for the auction as this thread ("Hudson salesman book")if any are curious and want to look. I'm usually cheap with ebay auctions and only do 1 pic. i think i'll splurge for this one and do more :)
