Just got a 52 hornet 4 door, It looks like a 308 with twin h automatic. But the engine is red, It wood have to gold right to be original right? How do i check the engine numbers. This hudson has not run in a long time, I think the plates have 64 stickers Its been parked and covered , But it also sat out in the field for a long time . Its all there surface rust, The crome is pitted interior poor. Just the right thing to spend my retirerment days and nights on, Have to build a nest for it now .But woud have to do that anyway just a little sooner then i thought. ILL post some pictures of the unvailing as soon as i can. Thanks John drivergo2:)

I have a 53 Hornet that also has a red engine. The serial number of the block matches the serial number of the car (it starts with 7C in both the block and the body). Yours should start with 7B if its a 52. For some reason, it looks like Hudson painted some of the earlier engines red instead of gold.

I think that 54 308's were red.



51-53 308's should be gold.

Yep, you're right. That is the general concensus. Knowing Hudson in those years, It's entirely possible, in the late weeks before the 54, they may have changed colors. For instance, the twin H air cleaners used in late 54 were of the "Hash" design and had the AMC decals in addition to the Twin H decals.

If someone were concerned with the absolute "authenticity" to eliminate any controversy..just go with the accepted ..red for 54 and up. Makes me glad the Hudson club doesn't Judge. But wish there were some "standards" to go by for those that enter AACA competition.

Oh Forgot the engine number question.

If you have the correct engine, the number will be stamped on the right front , near the top corner of the block. Just in front of the exhaust manifold. It should match your door post tag.

The thing that we forget nowadays is that every car that ever sat on a dealer's lot in the fifties got the engine steam cleaned and painted some fresh color. It was just standard procedure. I have some parts off of a '54 which still have the original Hudson red sticking out from under a later Chevrolet-like red-orange.
