What about before that (1951)? Silver? Anyone know what 24' and 27' Essex would have been?0

The color of your engine does not indicate the original year. In previous incantations, the engine could have been repainted. Or the engine changed, possibly as a dealer swapout ... warranty? In any case the engine serial number is based on the year it was scheduled to be built. The overlap months did create cars whose engine build timing was previous to the car body manufacture. The color you chose to creat the appearance of authentic stock engine compartment is as NICK stated above. With one exception... the Hudson 308 crate and 55-56 replacement engines that came from AMC are BLUE from the factory. These blue engines were usually painted the OEM color before installation, but not always.0

Ken, I thought that beginning with 1938 the (original) engine serial number matched the VIN of the car. Or are you speaking of one of the "cast it" numbers?0

Serial/engine numbers being the same started after the following car numbers in 1938:
Models 80, 81,82, 83 and 88 - 11630 except 12000 to 12319;
Models 84, 85 and 87 - 14126
Model 89 - 28566

Okay, thanks, so the 24' and 27' Essex was black and the Hudsons I've seen of that era were green. ...Right?0
