Billetproof Northwest car show

First noticed this in one of Hudsoncustom's posts (he was trying to get his chopped Brougham far enough along to take to "Billetproof" meet, but couldn't because he is an insurance claims adjuster, and had been dispatched to the midwest for the floods)- Since he is in my area, I looked further into it, and found that this thing is at my local fairgrounds! Called the number they gave for information, and guy said, "It's for '50's and '60's style hot rods and customs- no billet wheels or other foofy stuff." That sure sounds good to me- my '48 coupe was customized in 1952, and fills the bill. Dan and Rambo the Dog are probably coming, and anyone else who is lost in the '50's is welcome too. Starts at 9 AM Saturday. Would love to see any and all- "call me- we'll have lunch"- if you come, look for the red and white Hudson coupe- will probably be hard to miss. It's at the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds- Mapquest 2555 North National, Chehalis, WA for directions- or call me at (360) 748-0248 during business hours (preferred) (I do business at my business address, but only within limits) or (360) 748-8026 home.

Sounds like a good time, make sure to take some pics for us East coasters...

I'll believe this when I see it - but according to the weather prognosticators...
Should be a good time!
What time do the gates open?0 -
Yep, that's me. I don't recognize the venue- I got the car from a guy in California a couple of years ago, it came from Minnesota before that. I'm thinking photo was taken in California, because I believe the Cal guys put the Cad "sombrero" hubcaps on it. Anyone want to venture a guess on the pedigree of the grill? It's pretty obscure. . .
[edited]- On second thought, I think that pic was taken at Jim Harmon's place, when I went to a NW HET Chapter meeting last October or so.
Dan- gates open at 9. Going to be interesting to see how it goes over, being the first annual and all- It's also competing with a known local show, the Winlock Egg Days celebration. Winlock is charging $10 registration, free for spectators. Billetproof is $25 registration, spectators $10. BTW, my registration fee includes 2 admissions, so call if you want to arrange to meet outside the gate, and ride in with me on my nickel. As to weather- lately, when they say its going to be warm, its gotten downright HOT around here- Something about "barbecue low" pressure system off the coast, bringing warm stuff up from the south. Bring a hat.0 -
Here's a direct link to the event info. There's also a pre-party for those in the area Friday:
http://www.billetproof.com/upcoming_shows/northwest/show.htm
Expect some hardcore traditional rods.
I image "hudsoncustom" will be there with "panty dropper"?
I'm stuck working.0 -
Thanks for the link, Sarah. It was Hudsoncustom who mentioned this show- I didn't know anything about it, and didn't know it was a national group (sounds a little like Kustom Kemps of America, that had shows for a few years at the same fairgrounds back in the early '90's). Hudsoncustom mentioned that he was trying to get his car ready to come, but is a catastrophic insurance claims adjuster, and has been dispatched to Iowa for awhile. Shame you can't come- I could make a personal presentation of that suicide knob!0

Thanks for posting this! I was able to get things wrapped up in the midwest, and I'll be rolling the hudson down to the show after all. Can't wait to see your car! I've loads of pics of is stashed away on my memory stick somewhere.
Be sure to look for me, I'll be in the chopped Hudson brougham. Unfortunately, it will only be in primer (i'm shooting it tonight), at this point, but perhaps paint by Hotrod-a-rama in August?
I'll be out at the pre-party at mcminimums too..0 -

I'm not sure how long it will take to get down there, depends on how many potty-stops I have to make for Rambo - normally it wouldn't be but 1, but with the amount of water he's taking in right now I never know
I may check with the vet to make sure that kind of heat is ok for him right now while he's on chemo - right now he's living in 70 degree air conditioned comfort, like all dogs should0 -

Yeah, it was at Jim's place a few years back for the Swap Meet work meeting that got rained out. That's Fred Connors' car behind it.0 -
Dan- There's an area for parking with big oak trees for shade just south of the Fair parking area at the south end of the fairgrounds. He should be reasonably comfortable there. I don't think you could keep him cool enough in the regular parking area, in the sun.
Hornet53- Were you at Harmon's? Or did this pic get onto the internet? The plot thickens. . .
Hudsoncustom- Look forward to meeting you, and seeing your car (will try to sort out yours from all the other chopped Broughams- Hopefully, mine will be the only sectioned coupe with the red and white paint job... ;>)0 -

Yeah, I was there, rockin the Brand X that day. Before I moved to NC, I was a member of the NW HET (actually, I guess I still am). One of the younger guys. Used to meet Fred over at PIR on wednesdays and be the only Hudsons there.0 -

Yeah - I can't leave him in the truck, even in the shade - if it's 90 like they say...I'm trying to see if they allow dogs, but right now I'm thinking I may need to bail on this show...0 -

Wasn't there a picture of him behind the wheel at one point? Just have him drop you at the gate and give him some money for the nearest bar. Or, Applebee's, dogs love Applebee's.0 -

Starting to have second thoughts myself. . . Went over there about 7:30 AM, to see if they were letting cars in yet. There were probably 50 cars in line already. Staff guy said they open for both entrants and specators at 9. Went back to McDonalds, saw probably 100 more on their way over. I'm at my office now, and they keep rollin' by. There's about 400 pre-registered, he said, and I'm wondering if most of the day will be spent parked in line waiting to get in.
Last night was fun in Centralia, though. The Mrs. and I cruised over, and there were many, many cars driving around and parked all over town (they had a function at McMenamins, but not many there- everybody was on the street). I joked with a cop I knew about lax enforcement of the "cruising" law- He said they weren't going to allow "burn-outs", but driving around was fine. Lots and lots of "rat rods"- LOW and rusty, chopped and channeled, gotta crawl into 'em like a lizard.
Well, guess I'll head over. Gonna be a scorcher, may just park across the street and go in as a specator. Sorry you can't make it, but you're right, there'd be no way to keep Rambo cool out there today. Haven't seen Hudsoncustom and the Panty Dropper yet- hope he makes it.0 -
Mike - thanks for the update,
If Rambo wasn't on chemo, I'd go ahead and make the trek - but it's gonna be a warm one today and I'll keep him cool and safe! Who knew it could get so hot in Washington :rolleyes:0 -

Applebees - I can't pass one by now without thinking about "Talledega Nights"
"Let's go get kicked out of Applebees"0 -
Fine time had by all at 1st NW Billetproof show. 400+ cars, from the righteous to the ridiculous (my personal category for most "rat rods", which proliferated). No pics- wife had the camera. Some really nice cars, as well, the highlight of which was a tribute to Duane Steck's Moonglow, done in the world's prettiest shade of metallic blue, and maybe the prettiest car I've ever seen. A guy did it in his garage, took him 12 years.
Lots of interest in the sectioned '48 coupe (as usual)- and a sophisticated enough crowd that lots of them knew it was a Hudson (despite no indication of make other than Lincoln back bumper and Cadillac hubcaps), and several also recognized the section job. Kind of nice not having to repeatedly explain that no, their grandpa did not have a Lincoln just like this one.
Hooked up with Hudsoncustom and his girlfriend- he was there with his club from Snohomish area, and the "Pantydropper". That is gonna be one nice car. I can't believe how much he has got done in a short period of time- but then the guy just exudes energy! Car still needs the cosmetics on the metal, but from the quality of work he has done, he obviously has the skill (and determination) to pull it off.
Temperature ended up at 92 Saturday (then 96 yesterday)- wasn't as unpleasant as it could have been, due to a little breeze most of the day. There was some shade, for the early arrivals (which I was not), and I eventually "moved in" to a shady spot with a guy I went to high school with. But all in all, probably not suitable for Rambo the Dog- when the breeze died down, just downright HOT.
Next semi-local event for old timey hot rod and custom aficionados is "Hot Rod-O-Rama" at the Swiss Tavern in Tacoma on August 1-2. I may try to go, if I get my overdrive working.0 -
I had a good time at the show. I was able to get my chopped Brougham down there, after painting it the night before.
Good to meet you Mike, your car blew me away. Ask my girl, I've been wondering how a 2" section would look on the car ever since. ha ha! Thanks for the kind words...it has a LONG way to go, and kind of looks like a pig in lipstick at the moment...but It's a work in progress. ha.
See you at Hotrod-A-Rama in Tacoma! (Aug. 1 and 2).0 -
I made sure to put in a a request for August 2nd off back in April. I'll be coming just as a spectator, but couldn't miss this it nonetheless!0
-
Mike,
Sounds like it was hot and fun!
Rambo would not have done well with the heat given his chemo treatments right now make him "run hot"
Hopefully that will become an annual affair!
FYI - Another show in your area is...
Every Weekend After Labor Day (2nd weekend of Sept) the "Beach Barons" car club puts on the "End of the World" cruise and car show.
For those who don't know it's in Ocean Park/LongView Washington which is on the Pacific Ocean...directions...Drive to the Pacific Ocean, turn right and drive 'til the End of the World (Ocean Park)
I haven't been to this show but it's been put on for over 20 years and the "Cruise Loop" is 20 miles each way between Ocean Park and Longview!0 -
Okay,....did anyone happen to take a camera to this thing or what?:D0
