Date of manufacture?

I'm curious when my Hudson was manufactured (sometime in '40, I know). I was wondering if anyone has compiled a list of serial numbers vs. dates of manufacture for various model years?

Incidentally, NY DMV has my '41 registered as a 1940, because they use year of manufacture rather than model year for the older cars. Thus I can use 1940 vintage plates, but not 1941, because they only allow year of manufacture for registering with vintage plates. I could get that changed, but it's really not worth the trouble. (TMI?)

Thanks

Ed

At the moment we don't have serial number breakdown by month for 1940-1941 cars. We do have that info for 1946 thru 1954, tho.

I don't quite understand you DMV's fuzzy thinking on Year of Manufacturing for registration purposes. Cars back in that era were sold pretty much from a Sept or October to Sept (or Oct.) manufacturing schedule. It should be registered as a 1941 vehicle by the model number, which in 1941 began with a "1". 1940's started with a "4". The model is the first two digits - the serial number the remaining.

But, I guess that's bureacracy for you. I do know that there was a big problem during the 1920's when Hudson used the 2-series system. The 1st series was intro'd in Dec or Jan and the 2nd in mid-year, around July. A lot of states required 2nd series cars to be registered in the next year, ie, 1927 2nd series intro'd in July 1927 wound up being registered as 1928 models.
