New member here, from Northern California, with a 1951 Hornet project. I've been spending the past 2 weeks taking inventory and researching as much as I can to try and figure out what I'm missing. Since this site has been invaluable so far, I figured I'd say hi, upload some images, and see if anyone might have some spare parts.

The right side is in decent shape, but I'm missing the fender 'Hornet' rocket emblem

The left side needs quite a bit more work, and I'm missing all of the lower trim

And now for one thing that's been frustrating me.

Does anyone know how to remove the lock cylinder from the trunk housing? I see that there is a little brass looking rivot on the bottom, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to remove the lock (I have another piece with better chrome).

Thanks for any help or pointers!

Nice looking project car to start with - I'm jealous :)

Although my lock cylinders are from an older model than this, in mine there is a small notch or hole along the outer perimeter of the cylinder. I insert a pin or straightened paper clip, then insert the key and turn it. This results in the cylinder being able to turn farther than it normally would, and it reaches a point (on its turn) where the cylinder is no longer held into the housing. It can then be pulled out.

No guarantee that this is how yours works, however.
  • That is how you remove the lock cylinder from any stepdown
he needs the key or can use a key-maker to do it for him

The way in which you remove this particular lock cylinder from the 51 trunk lock is as follows; First, there is a drive pin/rivet that is set into a very small cap screw at the bottom of your trunk lift/lock mechanism. Your picture shows exactly where this is located. remove the drive pin/rivet by using a vice grip or similar locking pliers. Once the pin is removed, you will notice a recessed allen head socket. Get the approproate hex head wrench and remove this screw. The lock mechanism should now come out. Keep this lock cylinder in good shape as it fits only the 51 model Hornets and Commodores. The others for 51 were the same except for a shorter shank. Also if you don't have a key for this lock, look at the glove box key. The key code for your trunk is on the glove box cylinder but if you have your key already, it should be the same. The exception would be if someone switched them out at some point in the past.

To add a note to Hudzilla's directions. The rivet is an anti-theft device to prevent someone pulling the lock to get into the trunk. If you're not particularly worried about theft from your trunk, don't put it back in place when you reinstall the set screw which is what holds the lock cylinder. It's hard to pull, may even need to be drilled out. I replaced rivet with a bit of non-hardening putty. Closes the hole, hides the Allen screw. Can work an Allen wrench through it , should it prove necessary. Walt-LA
  • Thanks for all your help everyone! I was finally able to get the lock dismantled and cleaned up.
