Pointless Ignition Question

What's involved in converting my 254 eight engine's single point distributor/ignition to a modern aftermarket pointless type (Crane or Petronix)? It will be a 12 volt system but I've never done this type of conversion.

  • i machined a sb chrysler distributor to work on mine . involves machining the lower portion of the case to the same dinentions as the original and putting on the gear and cutting off the shaft .. not difficult at all if you have a lathe .

I have a Crane Universal XR700 Kit in 2 of my 6 Cyl Hudson Distributors and like it. The 8 should be same. Just remove the Points & Conderser and use the screws to hold the small 'Pick-up' Unit. It comes with several different small brackets to select for best fit. The wires go thru the original side hole and are plug & drive. A thin 'washer with 'Slots' goes on under the rotor and a small 'Box' goes on the firewall.... Pretty easy install

    I hear Pertonix is similar.
