What is this plate? I've never seen a a Hudson big six with a plate like this.

What would it mean? Any help or nugget of knowledge will be appreciated.

  • This was the high compression head made from cast iron instead of aluminum due to the Korean war. I think it was only on 1951 engines.
  • The plate tells you to use Premium gas with this head due to pinging. I have seen it attached to Aluminum heads as well.
  • Contact K-gap. Maybe they'll want to reproduce them.
  • thanks for the replies, I've passed the info on to the owners.

That engine is a Twin-H 308 with attached hydramatic. Complete with linkages to the carbs and tranny, breathers, and carburetors.

Saved by some young hot rodders from a salvage yard in Indiana, it was about to become a piece of lost history. They bought it in hopes of finding a good stepdown car to put it in or perhaps build a roadster type hot rod with it.

I started out that way, engine first.

Mark,I had one with the Tag also. We checked the one we had and it was the same as a 51 308 Iron ( CC chambers)

    Thanks Rudy.

The U.S.Army used some of these engines in small Generator Sets and the engine that I removed the H145 head was Army Green in color and had water-proof sparkplugs. No Dist.was in the engine.

Jack Clifford said the aluminum head was an inch too thin when manufactured (maybe an exageration?).He did manufacture a 1" thicker head. My 51 308 did leak and after a .020 cut, checked out perfectly flat, then it leaked again. An iron head fixed it.

I was surprised at how much money this head brought. I imagine one with this octane requirement plate woud bring all that much more.

  • Yikes I have 2 on my shelf. I am falling over myself in a rush to get them on eBay. LOL
  • You should be falling over yourself. Anything uniquely Hudson usually brings a good price. Since you have so many, when are you sending one my way? :D
