Missing! '37 Terraplane hood ornament

:(Somewhere between San Jose, Calif. and Carspn City, Nevada the Hood ornament on my '37 Terraplane dissappeared, quite possibly at a Denny's restaurant in the Sacramento area. While my wife and myself were eating, a gentleman did ask the year of the Terraplane and talked about them for a few minuts then left. I noticed the hood ornament missing a few days later when I was unloading the car from the car trailer. I Have been looking on ebayand also google but can only go with something universal if I want. I am going to advertise for one in the WTN, but in the mean time, are there any Terraplane hood ornaments out there that need a home? Thanks, Arnie

I don't know anything about if this would interchange? Seems pricey - but those are probably tough to come by?

My '37 TP hood ornament came from K-Gap, but I don't know if Danny has continued repopping those or not.

K-Gap sells the plastic the part, but the metal part is very hard to find. I decided to bolt mine (on my '36T) on with a special bolt so it is not easily stolen. I even take it off sometime, just to be careful. I hope to find an extra metal portion some time so I will have a spare.

Richard When was the last time you checked with K- Gap on that ? The last time i checked they said they could not find a source that would make them for them again? Chuck G

I wonder if the metal part is something that one of our merry band of "Hudson Casters" could be persuaded to reproduce: Geoff Clark, Erwin Sanchez-Flores, or Steve Traudt?



Regarding the cigars, one relatively-inexpensive method would be to acquire a transparent red acrylic rod, cut it to size, and turn it on a lathe. Then polish it. This is what I did back in the late 1970's. (Well, I supplied a pattern to a fellow in our woodworking shop and HE turned the "cigar" for me, free of charge!)



If your old cigar is faded, you can simply get a cloth polishing wheel and some rouge (just like they use to buff up metal pieces in the plating process) and make it look as shiny as new. You may actually be able to hand buff it using a mild abrasive (like paint compound?).

Good question Jon. I am about to have bases cast for '35-'36 fender lights. These will be done in the "lost wax" or "investment" casting method. I certainly could have them cast the metal part for the '36T. It would be better to get an example that could be stripped of its old chrome and fill all of the imperfections before it is cast. That way, they chrome very nicely.



Chuck, I got my "cigar" for my '36 from K-Gap 2 years ago and Dany had just gotten a few from his supplier. I am sorry to hear that he has lost the supplier, they are quite nice.



I am told that there is product that you can dip an old "cigar" in that will make it look like new, unfortunately I haven't been able to find where I filed away the little scrap of paper that I wrote the name of the product on. I do still have the old "cigar" that came on my '36T.

Hi Richard---The product you are seeking was called "Fabulon" & was used on the floors at bowling alleys. As I recall there was also a similar product called "Fabuloy" by the same company & used for furniture refinishing. Years ago, I dipped my 36 Hudson cigar in Fabulon & it dried to a bright red like new finish. Both of these products were a resin based varnish like liquid.
