insulation

I am looking at a way to reduce cowl/floor temperatures on my Superwasp. I used the typical 1/2" foil backed jute padded insulation you can can get at pepboys which does a good job of cushioning the carpet but doesn't keep the heat or noise out from the headers. I was looking at Lizardskin spray on insulalation but it's very expensive (close to $200.00), which brings me the an alternative. Have any of you used ceramic micro speres sold by hytech? You stir the cermaic beads into your paint and paint it on the interoior floors. The cost is around $11.50 plus the cost of the paint.

Rich, I haven't used the spheres yet but have known about them for quite awhile

Here's a link to a pretty thorough discussion on another forum with results different people have had mixing the spheres in differing substrate materials.

PLEASE: If you go this route USE RESPIRATORY equipment when mixing the spheres in - if you get this crud in your lungs you're toast!
  • To add to the information provided by Dan, you can compare the various sound and heat products at this URL.

    FYI

I use Insulation Rolls that JC Whitney sells when on Sale and never had a heat or noise problem. It is thicker than typical Foil Insulation sold at Rod Shops (& Lowes) with woven material on one side. It has instruction on which side to face down in different heat areas(Motor/Exh/etc)..I use the thin Rod foil insulation in the doors, etc.
  • One product is called Dynamat and can be found on ebay is easy to use and works well . They also have a web site like everyone else in the world these days.

Dynamat type material is good, but overused in most applications and does add a significant amount of weight to the car.

I personally wouldn't use the foil air bubble stuff at the hardware store - never liked the thought of that stuff getting hot.

The significant advantage to using the ceramic microshperes is the tremendous weight savings in comparison to the matting. And depending on what you use to suspend the spheres you can use a paint gun and get even more complete coverage.
  • Use Dynamat extreme it is half weight as regular. weight is not noticed maybe in a light weight drag car but nothing to worry about in the Hudson it is very thin, Amazon.com has Dynamat Extreme for 9 sheets thats 18x32 inch pieces for as for $115.00 and better prices if you keep searching. anything is better than none at all.
  • I should add that shipping weight for 9 18x32 inch pieces is 20 pounds i think you could cover alot of the interior and you would never notice 20 pounds let us know how you come out.thanks for listening.
  • Yup put Dynamat everywhere you need it in a Hudson added less that 30Ibs. For the noise dampening and insulation well worth the effort.

I know I've read ton's of great stuff about the Dynamat and it's sound insulation/reflection properties.

But removing an extra 100 pounds from your car will increase your fuel efficiency by as much as 2% ~ Every extra pound changes your Power to Weight Ratio too.

I was on a Racing Team out of SIR in the early 80.s...these guys would go to the extreme to lighten their cars. Acid dip the bodies, fiberglass panels, lexan and such just to shave a few pounds...

Funny thing is the guys who did the most work shaving weight off their cars all weighed in excess of 300lbs on average :p

I don't weigh 300 (anymore!) but still, after scraping what seemed to be 10-20lbs of undercoat and seal off that 49 ( and about 40 hours time:mad:) - my goal on that build is to try and bring it in about stock curb weight while addding some of the modern stuff...so for me every pound is something I think about - still working on my extras :o

I'm going to try the ceramic spheres suspended in a high-heat automotive type paint in the interior tub, doors, firewall. I think my trunk and remainder of engine compartment is staying "stock style"
    w/paint only on the surfaces.
