Fun, Changing The Clutch

Someone along the line of former owners of my '37 Terraplane decided to install a overdrive on this transmission or the whole overdrive transmission. Problem 1, there is no room to pull the transmission back as it hits the floor board, problem 2, there are two brace like arms, one on each side of the transmission, they are a bear to move or try to remove. All in all, the project is not much different from a stepdown. Any sujjestions, no beer, I gave that up. Have a great day. Arnie

You will most likely have to lift the engine out to get the transmission with overdrive out of this model. The overdrive did not come out until 1940, but is a popular fitting for earlier models. However, the penalty is difficulty in servicing. Several members here in N.Z. have fitted a Laycock overdrive unit to their Essex cars, but the benefit in less engine reves is offset by having to convert to 12 volts to power the overdrive, which oleads to reduced life of starter Bendix spring and drive, and certainly a real pain to remove the transmission. As Murphy's law states "Any unit fitted to improve perfomance, will inversely affect reliability and serviceability".
