'36 Hudson Eight original dash finish

I've just bought ANOTHER car, this time a 67 series 127" wheelbase sedan with twin sidemounts. The dash and window trims have been painted grey of all colours. I would like to know the exact original finish on these. My '36 Terraplane has what looks like a dark brown paint but definitely not wood grain - and I am sure this is original too - see image.
If anyone has some good detailed images of an original '36 H8 sedan dash this would be very helpful.

I'm pretty sure it would've been woodgrain. Have you looked for photos on the MSN Hudson site ?0

Hemming's HUDSON book, page 40, shows the dashboard of a '36 Hudson. It appears to be wood-grain.

The Hudsons, except for convertibles, had a woodgrained dash. But this RH drive critter may have been assembled in England, and maybe they did it differently.0

Please post a picture from the front end, I would love to see the dual side-mounts, does it have exterior horns? There is a pair on ebay right now. Pretty sure that it would have a wood-grained dash and window trim, that what shows in the 1936 dealers brochure. Also the '36T should also be wood-grained.0

So if the '36 Hudsons had wood-grained dash's, what did the Terraplanes have? The same woodgrain, or just paint (be it interior color, body color, or something else)?
Thanks,

Hey, the steering wheel on that car is on the CORRECT side for a change.LOL.0

One horn is broken.
It's a bit strange about my Terraplane dash, as the cover plate for the radio blank was also finished in the same brown colour with no hint of woodgraining, or of ever having being repainted..............it looks pretty good too, I prefer it to the woodgraining.0 -
Our '36 model 67 was unmolested before we restored it and had the main portion of the dash painted black, the glove box doors were woodgrained in the same pattern as the radio bezel and the inside window trim . Our car was built in Tilbury, Ontario, Canada.0

That's very interesting, as my model 61 Terraplane dash is a very very dark brown, but the glovebox lids are painted differently (lighter) and the paint on these has about disappeared with surface rust taking its place. So if your car is original, and my Terraplane, that would prove that these cars did not only come in woodgrain finish to the dash.
This leads on to why would this be? Was it an option or what, or export model maybe (RHD)?
Do you have a photo of your original dash that you could post here?0 -
Thanks for the picture. Are you missing the trumphet for the driver's side horn? There is a guy here in Escondido who just sold a pair of these on Ebay and I believe that he has another one. You also have a nice set of fender lights!! The dual side-mounts look very nice. Very cool 1936 Hudson.0

Glad to see that they got the steering wheel on the proper side on this one!!0

I have an original road test article from The Motor of the English RHD model 1936 long wheelbase touring sedan and the photo of the interior clearly shows a woodgrained dash.0

I have now found an original 1936 Terraplane colour sales brochure plus a copy of the large format Hudson & Terraplane News from 1936 that shows good big pictures of the dashes.
This is what appears to be the story:
1. Hudson Eights had a woodgrain dash and glovebox lids. The woodgrain was a wide type pattern of medium colour, ie not particularly dark or light.
2. Terraplanes had the chocolate dark brown dash just like the picture of my one I have posted, and woodgrain glovebox lids. It actually looks very nice.
That still doesn't answer the question as to why the 67 series mentioned in this thread by 4Hud had a black dash..............maybe someone specified that instead of woodgrain, or maybe the Canadian models were different (I doubt the latter).0 -
Some discrepancies between various Terraplane dashboards could be explained by the possibility that Hudson might have only done the woodgraining on the Custom Terraplanes and not the DeLuxe or Commercial ones (which might have been totally painted). Just a thought...0

Jon, I think that you have hit the nail on the head! I have a series 62, "custom" 1936 Terraplane and it was the one with all of the whistles and bells. It is very likely that the "DeLuxe," the lower priced model did not have wood grained dash, in addition to the other trim items that were also only for the series 62 and above. However, every thing seemed to be available as accessories. I have seen '36T trucks with dual sidemounts and exterior horns!!0
