Vacuum tank back-up

I was reading Phil Walsh's post on getting his 28 Essex drivable and he was having the same problem many of us do with his vacuum tank not staying full. My Dodge Bros pick up has a vacuum tank that gets it's vacuum from the oil pump. The Dodge thinking was if you lost oil pressure the tank should stop fuel delivery to the carb and keep you from burning up your engine. Great safety feature but when I hook up the vacuum line I lose oil pressure. If I cap the pump I have oil pressure. So as long as I watch my oil pressure I should be okay running. I'm thinking an explosion proof float switch in the vacuum tank could control the electric pump so it would fill and not overfill or run out of fuel. I can't go directly to the updraft carb with the pump as I can't reduce the pressure enough to not flood the carb. Besides, I like having the vacuum tank on the firewall, I'm just tired of trying to keep it working. I don't want to reinvent the wheel so if anyone has this set up working how about sharing. Otherwise I'll go forward and let you all know how it works out.

  • i have run an electric fuel pump on my 1930 hudson for many years with no problems still run 6 volts & updraught carby i have a 12volt pump fed by a dc dc converter(6volt in max 14 volts out) through a holley fuel regulator set as low as it will go straight into the carby

pin no. 12-804 for the holley regulator

the dc converter is branded Kemo GERMANY http://www.kemo-electronic.de

i picked it up at an electronics store did require a small bit of assembly

i found one at a swap branded radio shack (tandy)cat no 22-129B $5

i left the vacuum tank in position & left the pipes hanging down so all looks normal it is the best & only mod. i have done to the car. no more running out

fuel on the long climbs round home in QUEENSLAND AUST.
