41 hudson racer hits the track
My father, Randy Maas, got the 41 hudson out his weekend for the first time this year. Best time was 7.97 in a 1/8th mile (converts to a 12:40 1/4 mile time) coasting the last 20 feet in a race which he broke out. Motor is new so just starting to loosen up. Should have in the 7:70 range after adjusting the webers a little more, but we have a flying toliet set up ( a fuel injection on a clifford manifold which I think would get us in the 7:50 range which he need to put on.

I second that, pictures-pictures and more pictures.0 -
I took pics during the burnout and launching off the line on my dads digital camera. He will need to upload to the board if he can or we may need to send them to someone who can

Russ,
Sounds like Car has great potential... The Flying toilet set-up should be awsome.
Send the pictures to me (cv.cars@verizon.net) and I will Post on this Forum and/or walk you through the process.

Oh yeah, another vote for pictures.
My connection speed has gotten so bad I can't handle very big pictures, or I'd post them in the gallery.
How about the details on the new mill?

Okay hudson race fans. A little on the motor. Bored .060 over with half inch stroker. This is the motor I developed a front belt drive instead of using the traditional timing chain. Cam advanced 6 degrees. Also put a crank trigger on. All worked flawlessly. 12 to 1 compression ratio. Who says hudson won't run with compression. Also decided long ago to stay with .060 to .090 bore. You don't make any more power with that extra .020 to .030. I'd rather have the meat between the cylinders for head gasket seal. First time run off the trailer .032 bulb and run 8:02 with 17 degrees timing. Not bad I thought. Good power through the shifts to 4900. For the next run I decided to back the timing to 14 degrees. I knew I was running rich for the conditions but I like to make only one change at a time so I know what change helps or not. Second time trial .094 bulb and run a 7.99. Well not that big of a change, but what a terrible bulb. Must be loosing it! Well we were to get a third time run and I was going drop some smaller main jets into the webers. but they were running a quick 8 series and did not get the third run so the boys wouldn't let me change anything. First round of elimination had a.124 bulb and car ran dead on a 7.99. Lost --Well S--t. What the heck with these bad lites. Bought back in for second round. Noticed the air getting better but decided to leave dial in alone. Got to checking things and noticed the transbrake button was broke. The track put out a call and about 10 to 12 guys came over with with spare buttons. Really made be feel good so many were willing to help. Well round two--had a one second lead on my competion. Lite felt good. Looked over and felt I had him covered at the finish line, so I let off the accelerator just before the mph clocks and let her coast at the through the finish line. Figured I won that one--wrong--had a .011 bulb to his .072 and went to fast. Went 7.97. When I got back to the pits the boys wanted to know if I had brakes and suggested I tap them next time. She was on a low 7.90-7.93 run. I knew she left the line harder and ran like a bear. But I got my lites back so maybe not loosing it so fast after all. Next week I'll tune on the Webers some and see if I can get it in the 7:80's again before fuel injection goes on.0

Thanks for the details - what great fun eh? Reading this really makes me want to have a car for the straight track again, it's much more fun driving than watching!
Heck, I'll bracket race my driver if I have too... I wonder how fast the Crew-Cab dually would do in the 1/8th :rolleyes::p
I wouldn't be too concerned about the lights, you're still shaking things out (you included if you haven't raced in awhile)... They do make pretty cool tree simulators for computers now if you want some extra practice!
What's the car launch like ~ Any issues hooking up?0 -
Any pics of the engine. Like to see that belt drive setup.0

Randy,
Your Car looks very powerful... I bet unknowing spectators thought it was V8 powered. Good luck with getting it sorted out..
Sounds tricky running against your own time unlike 'Straight Up' Racing....

Second week out--Went rac'in again Sunday. Decided to lean main jets from #215 to #200 back so see what motor wants on fuel. First pass 8.29. Whoops wrong way. Put the #215 back in and second pass 7.99. Now I know it wants more fuel. Next I retarded the timing 3 degrees. Went a 8.06. She wants more timing. I'll have to drill out some jets since #215 are the largest I have. Went three rounds this week before double breakout between me and a mustang. Was leading by 1/2 fender and should have dumped.

Will be at Indy the weekend of Oct. 10-12.

Went rac'n again today. Third week out with this new motor. Last week I experimented with jetting--leaning the motor and backing timing off to see what happened and went the wrong way. This week I decided to put timing back where I first started at 15 degrees total and jets back to the 215 size. I had resized some jets .003 bigger to drop in after the first run but decided to go ahead and install them for the first run since I felt the weather conditions (less humid and cooler) would tollerate richer conditions. First pass 7.99. Not bad since that was my first baseline run 3 weeks ago. Decided to pull main jets and open them another .003 Second pass 7.92. Cool! Headed in right direction. First elim. I dialed 7.92 and also set the timing up 1 degree to 16. Won. Went 7.94-- 2 off but the other guy ran 2 off his dial also. Next round dialed 7.94 and won and ran a 7.94. Now I felt the weather change and felt the car may pick up so I dialed a 7.92 again. Tree-ed the guy with an .033 to his .041 reaction and my car ran a 7.9198. BREAKOUT. Well--time to load up and go home. Had a good time. The cool part was I pitted next to Tim Wilkerson and his son. Tim is the NHRA National Funny Car Points leader. They have a week off. He was there helping his son in the Super Pro division.with his car. I asked him to autograph one of my time slips which I would keep in my pocket for good luck and win the the event. He thought that would be great. Next week we go to Indy for the NHRA Open. I"ll run pro with the hudson 1/8 mile. Was hoping it would be 1/4.
So--Ralph where are ya. I think it would be fun for the pair to hudsons to go down the track together. Mr. Uncommon Eng.--got anything ready?
Loser buys the ice cream at the Dairy Queen. I'll bring extra cash just in case. Later.

Ralph is here but the car has been trapped in the garage for months. too much stuff going on outside of drag racing to get her out.
maybe we can get something going as i feel the need to kick some v8 but at
the track. i have tuned her a little better and the supercharger set up is really
screaming along. definatly not as quick as yours but I am hauling around a
lot more a$$ (myself included!) than you are. present weight is 3755 with
me in her since I added the supercharger.
lets try to pick a track within resonable driving distance for both of us and
pair off there. i game for a match up as long as its not heads up!
your about 2 seconds quicker in the 1/8 mile than i am in the Pacemaker.
later,
Ralph
