i think i will get some patience and keep her! if you all will help.
hello everyone. well i ma back from hershey and i have a new outlook. i met Carl webber and some other great folks. i currently have a 1928 model a tudor,a 1931 model a cabriolet , a 1927 model t roadster pick up truck, and a 1931 hudson sedan. i got the sedan from my uncle's estate as many of you know already. it had sat idle since the late 70's. the body is all original steel, and straight as the day it was made, no patches etc. the engine took some doin, it had a leak at the head on the passenger side ,so i took off both heads and replaced gaskets before that ,
i also had to get a radiator. i actualy got 2 one was leaky and one was plugged, i was told by an ol timer to put muratic acid in there while running to cook it loose. it worked! but it "cooked" some other stuff too! the side water jacket panel sprung a small leak, fixed that, the water tube also few holes in the bottom, fixed that too and have one being made. now i found water in the oil.i am unsure if i changed it after putting on the first set of head gaskets and replacing a freeze plug or not. i have another set of gaskets i got at hershey, i actualy have 2 other heads on an old engine that has sat outside since 1970 or longer, that i can take off. i am obviously new at this thing but , after touring hershey and seeing over 5000 cars and not seeing a 31 hudson sedan, i think i may just slow down , take it step by step and ask you guys for a lot of advice."AND KEEP HER!" i have always listened to folks who have been there done that. so please tell me everything i need to know!
i would like to get this thing running perfectly first. it starts and idles so well you can not hear it running! i need a plan! and some good folks to guide me and keep me focussed and patient. i guess the first thing is what to do about this water in the oil thing. what to test so i know where to start. i apologize for going on and on but i do need help i am 41 and new to the fact i can not call or go on line and get parts ! fords are good for that! i am currently putting an interior in my 28 and it will be done done done! nd i can concentrate on this hudson totaly this winter. it seems i will have a valuable rare unusual car when it is done so i plan to spend a few bucks ,and get it done right. so help on guys help on!

About all I can add is to tell you what you've already found out, don't put muriatic acid in your cooling system. Rather, use something like citric acid. Once you've removed the old coolant and disposed of it properly, citric acid will do the job and what gets drained out won't hurt the environment, kids or pets that may come in contact with it. Old timer tricks are from a time when we knew little, or cared little, about chemicals used to get the job done. What's good for the environment and those in it will be good for your car.0

What you mean you can't go "on-line" for Hudson parts????????? Maybe there aren't any parts warehouses "on-line" but places like this forum all you got to do is post your needs and "somebody" will probably show up and say "Hey, I got that!!!"

Scroll down to 1931 and you'll find the following items I've had Gregg put on-line for me:
1931 Hudson Great Eight Mechanical Specifications REF SHEET No.35
1931 Paint Specifications Covering Greater Hudson Eight, Essex Super-Six REF SHEET No.36
1931 The Greater Hudson 8 Color Catalog
1931 Hudson 8 Parts Book
1931 Hudson 8 Instruction Book
1931 Hudson 8 Auto Lite Electric Instructions
I also have some 1931 stuff on my web site - but I have to re-organize the place. At the moment you can search each link - for example in the tech bulletin sites - by clicking on Edit, then in the search box that comes up when you click on "Find on this page" type 1931, then click on next.
In the meantime Happy Hudsoning. This here Hudson club is one of the best I've ever seen or been associated with - you found that out, I'm sure, at Hershey.

sure did! thanks for the insight what should i do first to figure out the water in oil thing?0 -
what should i do first to trace the water inoil thing? how do i know if it is a head gasket, head, or worse?
thanks0 -
If you're lucky it could be a head gasket; if not lucky a cracked block.
Only way I know of checking is to pull the heads - if it's been leaking for a while there should be some water stain trace, maybe. Of course if you've already changed the head gaskets the problem may have been solved and you didn't change the oil.
Might be a good idea to drain the oil, then pull the oil pan and check to see if you have water seeping in somewhere. Might not be able to see it, tho, but at least you checked.

thought i might drain it good and run some old oil in and see if i get water again, if so then i think i will pull heads and have them checked. is there anything i should rinse the oil pan out with? before i put another load of oil in?
thanks

Bob-
I personally like sploshing a little kerosene around in the pan when off the engine. Any gunk, make sure to clean it out, then wipe it down and let it air dry completely before re-mounting.0 -
update : i drained it real good, waited 3 days, then i put fresh water in the radiator, and old oil in the engine. i ran it solid at a fast idle for about 20 minutes or more (till i ran out of gas!) and NO WATER IN OIL! SHOULD I CONTINUE TO HOLD MY BREATH? do you think it was hot enough to openany cracks? the oil seemed rather cool, warm at most. any thoughts?0

Hi Bob,
Just a couple random thoughts. While the heads were off to replace the gaskets, did you happen to take them to an engine machine shop to have the gasket surface checked to be sure they were straight, and not warped? If the surface is not perfectly straight, even with a new gasket installed, a coolant leak could re-occur. It is also important to be sure to tighten the head studs to the proper torque, and in a specific order of sequence on Hudson heads. The order of tightening sequence usually starts at the center stud (in your case on each head), then radiates out from there. I don't have a copy of the torque sequence for the early 8cly with the two heads, but am sure someone on here with an early 8 should be able to help you out. You might try sending a message to "Frank Spring" (aka Ed Souers) here on the forum as he has two 1932 Hudson 8's, and might have that info on hand. It is also important after the engine is put back together, and run for a while to fully warm it up, to go back, and re-torque the head again to compensate for the expansion that takes place. Hope this might be a help.

Hi again,
Forgot to ask if you dropped the pan off the engine to recheck for water in the oil, or did you just pull the drain plug? If a small leak, it is possible that water could be up in the dipper tray, and didn't get down into the bottom of the pan in the 20 minute time span that you had it running, so may not have shown up in the sample by just draining via drain plug.
Dave0 -
did not drop the pan . i torqued the bolts as you explained when i replaced them i did not however take them to a machine shop. i am going to watch it and run it a great deal to see if it still is a problem then i will have them checked and re install . i dont think i drained the oil when i did it the first time i am hopeing thats all it is . ill keep everyone posted. how do i set the timing? i think it is off a little starts and idles perfect but on a load seems to miss and bog.
thanks

Scroll down to 1931 and open the 1931 Hudson 8 Auto Lite Electric Instructions link. It tells you how to set the timing.
