Wanted:Napa part #s for tie rod ends.

Hey all,

I seem to be confused (big surprise) about the correct #s for the tie rod ends for my 36 Terraplane model 61.

I have ES46 and they are too small. I have seen ES104 and ES140 numbers listed in different places. Which ones correct? What about a NAPA cross?

You are Spot On... The Hudson Parts Swap Book lists Moog ES104 with a L or R as the correct part number for 46-47 Hudson and 36 Terraplane.
I do not have the NAPA book, but the following is from my vintage MOOG catalog:

lists the ES140 in L and R varients. The applications are: AM and Chrysler Jeep Truck 73-47 (L), AM and Chrysler Jeep Truck 86-47 (R) Buick 62-57, Nash 39-36, Olds 62-39, Pontiac 58-39.

The ES46 is not listed - Moog Catalog date is Jan 1997

Other Swaps information I have on record: 40-47 Hudson All ES104 R/L, 38-39 Hudson all (?Terraplane?) ES104 L/R

Tie Rod End Auto Star ASES140R R outer, L inner 36 Thru Stepdown Moog,Mq ES140R SPI 401-1005 Auto Zone 26385

Tie Rod End Auto Star ASES62L L outer, R inner 37 Thru Stepdown Moog,Mq ES62L TRW ES324R Auto Zone 26386

The 8-cyl models in '36 had a larger diameter tie rod and ends, so you may find some that are shown as '36 Hud but are larger than the Terraplane ones (and by the way, "inner" and "outer" doesn't apply until 1940, when they introduced "center-point steering").

So, Park, if I understand correctly there isnt a R and L? They are threaded the same way? Being as they go into one long sleeve that wouldnt permit proper toe alignment would it

Pre 40 had one R and one L since there is only one tie rod.

Center point as in 40 and later has two short tie rods, each with a R and L

If you want to use the ES140 tie rod end, you cannot use the ES140L. It is different from the ES140R (See picture). Use the ES62L instead.
