E-Bay Policy
Howdy! I know that this is not the proper forum for this - so - I apologize up front. I’m getting no sympathy from my wife – so – I figured that I’d see if I could find some sympathy here. I just found out that E-Bay has changed its policy – effective 20 Oct – so that except for one or two categories of items – all transactions have to be done through PayPal – which (naturally) charges a transaction fee. I just find it interesting that on 03 Oct 02 PayPal became a subsidiary of E-Bay – which means that E-Bay owns PayPal - so now they make more money per transaction. I guess that I’m a dinosaur – but – I resent having someone (E-Bay) tell me how to pay for my purchases – so – my E-Baying days are over. So – now “you-all†can understand why my wife is “kinda†happy about this turn of events - since she figures that I have more than enough cars & parts.!!! Enjoy! Rich

Each to his own. I've always used PayPal, wherever I could. I have a small, seperate bank account with only about $50 in it that I use, just in case.
I find it convienent, quick and easy. But then I'm one of those that pays his bills every month on-line. Don't have to worry about being out of town when the bills come due - if it looks like that's the case I just set up a one time payment in advance, they add the amount and I can come and go without worrying about late fees.

I don't mind paypal, I find it to be a little easier than getting checks and money orders and having to run to the bank and wait for things to clear. BTW, just finished a couple transactions after the 20th and did not have to go through paypal.0

Alex, Thats all well and good ,but what about the option of having the SELLER determine what method of payment they want to accept. After all they own the article and paid for the listing. It would be like a newspaper or a magazine that runs your classified ad telling you how you will be only able to accept payment through their publication. I have been aware of the coming of ebays change for about 2 months and have felt exactly like Richie felt. Ebay wants more money and dresses it up as a more "safe" way to deal with each other. Well now that they own PayPal it dosen't hurt their bottom line either. If they really felt that way why not just say everything must go through Visa or Mastercard? Most folks already have that and there wouldn't be a need to set up with PayPal. Visa and Mastercard also have methods of dealing with fraud and bad faith transactions. BTW, ebay says it won't report transactions to the IRS but PayPal never said that. With mail order business amounting to about 15 billion dollars per year get ready for Uncle to want to get his mits in this source of taxation. Wonder if PayPal will resist giving up their tranaction list so Uncle can have a peek and decide how much more in taxes you'll be paying. I think that ebay has made a mistake. I have heard that they tried this tact in Australia and the UK and it didn't fly... Wonder why?? I don't like being told how I will handle my transactions and my lack of listings on ebay from here on will support this. I'm not saying don't use PayPal. I'm saying that if I don't want to use that method of payment that I still be given the choice of what method I will accept.0 -
I am with Lance, I just paid for a auction with a personal check. The auctioning person would not accept PayPal. Which is my preferred method of payment for purchases and acceptiing payment for my auctioned goods.0
-
Hudzilla - Thank you! You have stated my argument much more eloquently than I have. I believe that the seller should determine which payment method he/she prefers. Rich0
-
I'll go along with that - seller should have the option of payment method. But I don't think ebay can mandate what payment method to be used. Sellers can still state preference of payment. Ebay is not going to force anyone to use paypal - they know they'll loose sellers if they do.
I was just stating my preference is all.

I buy alot of things on E-Bay and Pay-Pal makes for a fast and easy transaction. I end up getting my stuff faster aswell. Buy or sell, I'll pay for the security and convienience.0
-
I also use Pay Pal, the convenience of paying immediately rather than go to the bank get a bank draft, pay for the draft, pay for postage, wait for the seller to get the draft, about 9 days days if dealing with you guys in the US, OK paypal costs but what doesn't these days. If I pay with Paypal I have the goods here in Aust about the same time the draft arrives in the USA.
I recently sold some guy in the USA some goods he paid with a money order, the sale was $12.00 they want $15.00 to cash the money order here in Aust, so I"m out of pocket a lot more more than what the paypal charges would have been. Naturally I did not cash the money order, so lost out there.
Look at the recent Olympics they only took Visa Card for their ticket sales.0 -
Excuse me. Hudzilla is right on.
I have excellent credit for 50 yrs at least. Pay Pal won't even let me in their program. I am the buyer. I am paying the bucks, to buy the item.
I should have the option to buy how I want to buy, especially if you have only one credit card. I don't want to be told you have to do what we tell you. I came from the society of no Internet. Yes I know get up to speed. Bull crap. I earned the right to have a credit card. I went to a store last week and paid cash, and they wanted my drivers license to complete the transaction. What the hell is this. I hope Pay Pal goes to you know where. They deserve it.0 -
Hudson Grandpa, I don't know what you were buying but in my business, equipment rentals, I don't take cash deposits. Some people think a deposit is a purchase and don't come back or if they destroy something they don't have any more money. We take a credit card number for security. If they don't want to pay we can get them for credit card fraud. Unfortunately unscroupulous customers dictate how the honest people have to be dealt with. So every customer, cash, credit, or check, at the end they can pay however they want, doesn't take anything without showing me a valid drivers license first. The only thing I don't take is paypal!!

You go for it Hudson Grandpa!0

Ebay can stuff it. PayPal is a bytch to "pay" with, and it sure as hell ain't my "pal". Ebay's level of greed has risen astronomically over the past few years. They tout their methods as "consumer safety", yet if there is a problem, they have NO desire to do anything about it.
Screw Ebay, and especially screw PayPal. They've jerked me around when I've complained about the two bad experiences I've had with each, and their response was essentially "screw you, Buddy, we don't care"...so, neither do I. Pi$$ on both of them.0 -
It was a bottle of wine at a Target Super Store. About $9.00 cash and had to show Drivers License to take it out of the store. My son says has to do with matching the bottle of wine to the customer, making sure the store is not selling to underage...0

I'm fine with PayPal, never any problems. My peeve is with sellers who will only take money orders- gotta go downtown, pay for the MO, mail it off, what a pain. On more than one occasion, I've passed on bidding on an item when seller will only take MO, especially if its a low cost item.0
-
I'm with Mike, refer to my previous reply on M.O's.0
-
When I was selling on ebay, I only took money orders, and NEVER had a problem with them. You can get money orders for as little as a penny. The USPS charges two bucks. I usually insisted on USPS MO's, because if they were bad or fraudulent, the Post Offoce gets involved, and they take that shiite seriously! Egay, OTOH, doesn't give a shiite less about if you have a problem or not. So, like I said previously, to hell with both egay and paypi$$.0

Exactly. My main gripe is corporate greed - E-Bay wants to get paid on both ends for listing the transaction and then get paid again for electronically transferring funds. Then they compound it by thinking that we are so dumb that we believe that they are doing it for our protection. I've done money order transactions with E-Bay purchases for five years and have NEVER had a problem. I've done my last E-Bay transaction. In the future - I'll work more closely with Car Club websites such as this excellent site for my purchases. Besides - I've met some excellent folks this way - and - would rather give them my money than to give a dime to E-Bay.0

OK, for all of those of you that want to continue to live in the past. If you notice there are changes happening out there. My local McDonalds no longer takes personal checks--WOW!! how could something like that happen??? I started using personal checks back in the early 60's. How can they tell me that my checks are no longer any good!!! And, McDonalds are not the only ones that have stopped taking checks. And guess what, some businesses do not take American Express cards. Once again, that was the standard all through the 70's and 80's. If you had an American Express card you were part of the "rich class." I (me and a friend) bought two stepdown parts cars this weekend and actually paid cash--what a novel idea???
I guess what I am trying to say is that things change. Those "just have to have, need them or not" parts are now available on-line. No beating the bushes looking in folks back yards and coming up empty. No chance to consider what I would pay for a part in a yard and then determining if someone else wants it more. And, God forbid, no buying parts that I do not need just because they are a good price on eBay. So, time presses on. It is OK to be a bit miffed; However, you never want to say never and throw the baby out with the bath water. So, someone is making a percent on your purchase--we do not pay taxes on eBay (yet?) and parts are ready and available--such as that "perfect condition" 1939 hub cap that is on the spare tire of my project. Just wonder how long it would have taken looking through local junk yards to find that? NOT!!!
So, calm down a bit--take a nice chair out to the shop and take a long look at that finished project (be it one or many) and think just how great this hobby is because someone came along and made parts accessable to us and sometimes at a reasonable price.
Just my opinion from way out here in the sticks....:o0 -
I have never sold on ebay but have bought Hudson and other products and over paid for some. What I see is the sellers are getting as much for their items as possable like Ebay-PayPal does including Hudson people. I do not see many Buy It Now low prices for Hudson or anyother hard to find items. I like Ebay for the fact that where else would you find some of these Hudson parts or what ever with out them ? My 2 Cent worth,
Ron

For some, eBay can be addictive and the crowd that heads up the company know that and wants to make spending easier. For those who have a shopping compulsion, maybe the prospect of having to print out the order, having the cash to get a money order and mail it all keeps them in check. It's way too easy these days to shop beyond ones means using credit, so having cash in hand and using money orders may not be such a bad thing after all.0

Those of you who think Paypal is a ripoff would have a stroke if you knew how much in fees your average mom and pop store pays to accept credit cards. Especially those airline miles credit cards, which can get as high as 4.5% plus $.30 transaction fee. They make Paypal look like a bargain. On top of those percentage based fees, many businesses rent their credit card machine for $50-$75 a month plus pay a monthly fee of $20 to $100 just for the pleasure of giving the credit card companies business.
On top of the cost advantages to Paypal, when I sell something substantial to an unseen buyer across the country (or globe) I don't have to worry about a counterfeit cashiers check, counterfeit money order, stolen credit card, bounced $15,000 check or counterfeit hundred dollar bills. I've seen all of these in my piano store.0 -
Ebay sucks. Paypal sucks. They have zero concept of "customer relations". All they want is your money and for you to be tied to their "services". Brownie, you are right. Times DO change. Ebay used to be an enjoyable, profitable, and entertaining experience. Times change. It is NOT any more.
BTW, I never said that paypal was a ripoff. They were absolutely NO help in a dispute I had with a seller...none! Ebay took the seller's side in the deal. I was out $85.00 plus fees. So, screw them both.0 -
Hmmm, looks like a classic case of the Golden Rule. Them that has the Gold, makes the Rules.0
-
I agree with Patrick on the Pay Pal. I've had enough problems with them, and i won't subject myself to further abuse. I've had good luck with Ebay both as seller and buyer. Too bad they decided to make PayPal mandatory.
It's been a couple years since the problems I had with PayPal and I have given some thought to setting up a new PayPal account...Give them a second chance... then...I had second thoughts after a search of Ebays OWN site regarding problems with Pay Pal.
From now on I will only bid on sales that I can pay OTHER than payPal and will not sell at all.. WTN and the Forum will get any listings for stuff I want to sell.0 -
I have sold four classic cars, a boat and made over 80 transactions mostly buying Hudson stuff on E-Bay. Pretty hard for me to find an issue. I've had much worse problems dealing with people face to face, which includes fellow HET members.0
