Starting on my new project

I am now going to start work on my new project the 51 Pacemaker. A couple of things look promising, the underneath of the body is excellent and the frame is also. The outside is terrible, dents, rust pits and most of the chrome is bad. The engine number matches the vin number so that is good, it is a 232 with the complete drivemaster setup.

I found one thing that surprised me and may bring back some memories for any Hudsonites living in PA. There is a door sticker for service of the engine, tranny, air cleaner etc. The business that did the service was Blenheim Hudson Sales and Service 3628 Walnut St Philadelphia 4 PA. The service was done on 2-8-51. A second sticker had no date but the mileage was 14,000.

It is kinda cool to see old things like that and I will leave them on the car.

Richie.

Russell, I hope to save it and will enjoy the journey from beginning to end. I have no deadline just finish it at my own pace. I will post pics as time progresses. Richie.

I like my 50 Pacemaker very much Bent Metal and think I will like the 51 just as much. Half the fun is doing the work and enjoying the result. Richie.

Oh yeah she's a great candidate and needs to see the road again. Looks like there is a lot there that is original and ready to work with. Wish I had my '51 P coupe back. hehe.

Good looking project. Solid and complete, good way to start. Maybe next year you can drive it to PF :) With some luck I can get my truck back on the road soon too.

It was good meeting you and hope to see you again at one of the meets.

Aaron D. IL, I hope it sees the road again and is as good as my 50 P. It is very complete and basically just needs lots of work and time which I happen to have. Richie.

Matt, it was nice to meet you also and hear about your car. I doubt I will have it done by next year but one never knows. I hope you do get your truck back on the road, I'd like to see it. We are planning on returning to PF next year and are also planning on going to the meeting at Ed Forrester's in Ellijay on the 15th of this month. Hope to meet more Hudson people and see their cars. Richie.

Is this the car that was auctioned off at the 2007 meet in Auburn? Good luck with your restoration.

No Jim it was in New Jersey and thanks I'll need lots of good luck. Richie.

Good luck on your new project. Dont apply for a job on the side, you'll need your free time(no such thing) on your treasure.

Enjoyed talking/listening at PF, meeting your wife. How about posting some before and after pics of your new car? We like to see the before ones earlier. What color will this one be? Bob

I think you have a good solid car to restore. I owned two Pacemakers and really liked their short wheel base. Both were low geared with OD and exceptionally fast for 232.... Good luck with your project.

Thanks Bob,I enjoyed the listening more than the talking at PF. You and Mark are fun to listen to because of the knowledge you guys have. I'll post a few pics of the 50 as before, during and after. I will also post pics periodocally of the newest addition 51 4 door. My wife loves old cars and took pics of every car at PF. She wants the 51 to be red and I'm trying to talk her out of that and into a more conservative color. I think I'm losing that battle. It will be a good long time before I have to worry about that though. Richie.

Hi Ol racer, it really is pretty solid and I'm looking forward to working on it. This car also has OD but I'm not sure about the gears in the rear end, haven't checked them yet. I will remove the DriveMaster setup when I get to that area, too complicated for me to figure out. I like the saying "keep it simple"!!!! Thanks for the good luck Ol racer. Richie.
  • Really good looking sedan there.

You aren't going to believe this, but that dealership is the one my Super Wasp was bought new from in '53. Small world, huh?

Can't wait to see what you do with this new jewel!

You are right Mark, now that is hard to believe!!! Here is something else that is hard to believe, started that 232 up today and it runs geally good. Quiet with no noises at all. I gravity fed the carb and it back-fired through the carb and out the exhaust for about 5 minutes and then just smoothed out and idled like my 50 P. It does smoke pretty badly after starting and smokes less the more it runs. A buddy of mine stopped by and couldn't stop laughing when he saw it running, He couldn't believe it. The car was in storage for 35 years and started right up with just a new battery, squirt of gas in the carb and I put the used plugs out of my 50P in it. Something else too was the amp light went out right away and the oil pressure light also went out. The temp gauge works too. Head lights and brake lights work and I don't know how the brake lights work because there can't possibly be any fluid in the master cyl. I can't say enough about Hudsons. Richie.

Try THAT with a new car after its' been in storage! ...or with any other make! haha - You're lucky to have a wife that likes old cars. If you get stuck painting it red figure it's the price you pay for being so lucky. LOL

Aaron D, you have good sense of humor !!! I am lucky and appreciate that fact. I put the fuel pump on last night and ran it a couple of hours today using a gas can for the fuel pump to suck out of. Didn't really like the gas can sitting up on the cowl to gravity feed it. Richie.
