Reminds me of a drive-in story I heard once.

Down Maine, where I used to live, authorities found two men, frozen to death in a car at the local drive-in when the snow began to melt around April.

Tracing the license plate they went to an address in the next town and found Mrs Stupid (we'll use "stupid" her so we won't offend anybody - I've had people say "Hey, I'm (French, Irish, etc) and I resent that. So far nobody's come up to me and said "Hey!! I'm stupid..........) Anyway the cops interviewed Mrs Stupid and asked where her husband was. She said "I don't know. Eddie and a buddy of his left the middle of Dec to go to the drive-in to see the movie "Closed For The Season" and he hasn't come home yet. :D

Yeah, because that means they're at the snack bar.

Harry- The SNACK BAR??? Come on, man.

Great pics!! I love 'em. I'm gonna save these . . . the top one sure would make great wall art.

My wife, who is much younger than me, is not old enough to have the pleasure of attending drive-ins. When we got Doc, though, for some reason, she had this insatiable desire to go to a drive-in in the Hudson. What we started out doing was climbing in the back seat, prop the portable DVD player into the robe cord, add some external speakers in the windows, then make out and watch the movie. We must be moving up in the world, 'cause now we have a DVD projector that we blow up as big as the garage door, still with the speakers in the window. I think it would be cool to find a couple of old drive-in speakers and gut 'em and put in some modern speakers inside of them, that way we could hang them on the windows . . . just like days gone by. We have a drive-in right in our driveway . . . it's a blast. :D

RL, go over to ebay and type in "drive-in speakers" in the search box - they all over the place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tad expensive, but, hey, you want nostalgia, you gonna pay for it.

Here's a web site that tells you how to restore them:

Google searches may turn up more.

    Dan-

You even made it look like dusk. That's too cool.
  • The last Drive-In in this area closed down 5 years ago. I remember, Back in the 60s, sneaking friends in, in the trunk of my 62 Impala, fogging the windows up, Ripped a speaker off once when I forgot to hang it back on the stand, spreading a blanket on the hood and leaning against the windshield on a warm summer night. Then came the XXX movies in the 80s when you couldn't take the family. By the mid 90s it was mostly Sci-Fi movies, which wasn't too bad but Work always seemed to get in the way (working 2nd or 3rd shift) then it seemed like they just let the place get so run down that the screen was falling apart and it was hard to see the movie.
I guess you can't go back but it is nice to remember the good old days.

Memphis has the Malco Summer Quartet Drive-in - 4 screens, located on Summer Avenue (U S 64) just east of I-240/I-40. Last I knew, during the summer it was open 7 nights a week, with double features. During the colder months I think it's just open weekends.

  • We still have a few drive-in's in Socal, the last I went to you had to clip a wire to the radio antenna and tune in to a certain station on the dial. I'm not sure my battery would last through a double feature. That and the Hash doesn't have an ignition switch that has an accessory side. I suppose I could by pass the switch and run the radio to a hot wire. I think I need to put a modern radio into the Hudson case and put an auxillary battery in the trunk to run it.

Russ, didn't you call your back seat the snack bar??? If my girlfriend asked if we should go to the snack bar we always ended up in the back seat. I can't remember one time I saw a complete movie at a drive in. It seems my girlfriends always had romantical notions.

Still a drive-in in West Chicago IL. The Cascade Drive-in. movie can tune in on your AM or FM radio or you can use the speakers. double feature 2 movies for the price of one.... good times. I wanted to get the chapter to scheduel a meet there but no luck so far.

Maybe the old timers don't want to drive under the influence of

Viagra? That or it's hard to hold a meeting when everyone there just wants to watch the movie. I think it might make a fun cruise night, problem is I go to bed to early to stay awake for the movie.

    Denver...

You and Amy are true HUDSON Romantics...

Central Texas used to have many Drive In Movies but as others have said they have gone the way of the Edsel. There is one theater about 40 miles from Waco that still shows movies on the weekends. They cater to the folks who want to have good family fun. The shows are decent and they keep the place up well.

Thanks for sharing ... Looks like you might be in the High Desert area? Calhan?

Great memories of good times past.

  • We used to have many drive-in theaters in the East TN area but they too are becoming as rare as hens teeth. The only one I know of right now, that still operates, is on the NW side of Knoxville about 75 miles from here.....problem is that the last time I went by there they only advertised XX rated movies.............I guess it's a good thing that the screens face away from the road! could have a massive traffic tie up there.......LOL

We used to have 2 in Burbank, Ca. and 5 others in the San Fernando Valley. All gone. When we lived in east Tennessee we had 2 in Elizabethton, Tn. One was closed the other was still open when we left in the 1980's. An inexpensive way for the whole family to go to the movies.

The way prices are today it might cost $4 to park the car $10 a head, $15 a head for those in the trunk, to see a movie at a drive in. Lee

The wife and I still partake in the drive-ins pretty regularly with the Hudson.

Here at the Silver Moon, first run movies are $4 a head and they're surprisingly

full on weeknights and you better get there early on the weekends.

Nice to post this, it reminds a lot to us, even things that did'nt happened. I explain, I am 57 now and I will always remember that, when I was 18, on a visit to an older cousin, a 34 years old women came to visit. I was staring at her eyes and legs and... In my mind I was wondering what would I have to find to get her to a date ( since I was quite younger). I found her phone number and took a chance to call her and told her I had two entries for a drive-in. She said I was too young but I told her she looked quite young herself and I looked older than my age and the fact that we would be in my car, in the dark, nobody would notice anyway. And she said YESSSS! But never knew what would have happened because the next week I got a job 600 miles away... Still wondering...

The Parkway drive-in Maryville towards townsend is still open. We make it there a few times a year. Something like $5 for a double feature :) It is very family friendly and we always enjoy going. Gotta go early to get in, they sell out when the good movies are in :)

We were in East Tennessee in late July and I recall seeing a drive-in in Elizabethton. Thought it was pretty neat! :)

The last drive-in here in Southern Maryland closed up about 30 years ago.

    Kevin C.

We were down there looking for a place to move to when the wife retires next year.
