ouch! pre-holiday hydramatic troubles
I backed by Hornet out of the garage today to wash it, and it backed out fine, but when I put it in any forward gear it would not go forward. Shortly thereafter, a large puddle of transmission fluid leaked out.
Ouch, what am I looking at here , and where to seek assistance in a central Texas town?
Thanks in advance for any advice/commiseration.

I suggest first checking the fluid level then jack it up to see where the leak originated.
Any Trans Shop should be able to assist and most parts are available, but first check the obvious.... Level, and the Linkage......
My Hydro (that had sat for a long time) would 'hang up' in the 'park' position when shifted out of Reverse a few times until warmed up. I overcame it by giving a little more gas then it would 'release' and go forward.0 -
Thanks,
I just got off the phone with Gus Souza, and I'm working my way thourh his recommendations--which are similar to yours.

The moral of the story, drive those Hudsons.
Although it may not apply in the case of a 50+ year old Hydra-matic, newer units (TH-400 for example) that are left idle for an extended period of time will cause the torque converter to drain out and belch fluid out of the vent pipe.0 -
JP... Hollywood or sedan? I have the Hydramatic books if you need specifics...

I am no expert but since had the similar problem (not wanting to go forward when shifted out of reverse)
I suggest removing the side cover to check the slide Piston & Lever is moving correctly. I found the inside shift lever worn where a selector ball rode apparently from someone's abuse over time that would catch on the rough spot. The cover and inspection can be done in-chassis from ubderneath; If careful can reuse the gasket or use Permatex form a Gasket caulk.
Its doubtful anything major wrong if it drove into the garage then just sat awhile.. When do figure out post your findings; Good Luck0 -
Mine was the clutches when that happened. Ended up with a complete rebuild. Funny thing was it was working fine then one day I backed up and she wouldn't go forward. I guess after fifty plus years it just decided it was time to get some new parts. Since I have no idea what it's previous history was except it also say for about 5 years without use I don't know if there were previous problems. Good luck on yours, I hope it isn't severe as my problem was.
