End of a Hudson adventure.
Hi all,
It seems the combination of terrible economy and being way (way!) over my head has brought my days of Hudson ownership to a close.
I drove my 53' Hornet for many years up in Seattle. Now its in Santa Barbara. Truely loved it. When my block cracked I figured I would rebuild the whole thing properly. Sadly it hasnt gone as planned.
So....
I was looking for some advice on how to proceed.
Other than no engine, which is a biggie, I have pretty much all the parts you would expect for a Hudson project. Some of them in better shape than others. Ive even got some goodies like a really, really nicely rebuilt Hydro, a Clifford AL head, an Edmunds manifold, tube headers and a dual carb setup. All the chrome pieces (none of them that shiny but all there). New rubber and seals in a box. Some other odds and ends. Lots of it in stacks and boxes.
I need to get rid of all of it. Id rather sell it all off to someone that will do something with it. I suppose I could sell bit by bit on ebay until I'm down to a stripped chassis but I wouldn't feel great about that.
Are there any constructive thoughts from you guys?

Since you are looking for opinions, here goes
Lay all the parts you have for Hornet out and take good pictures of each individually. Then the car inside and out. Write up a good description of all you have and post same here with links to the pictures. Decide what your minimum selling price is and let the whole deal cook for several days. Then sell to person who meets your price.
Good Luck. Acturally I would be interested in the headers and possibly the Edmunds... but better all to go to someone who will assemble another Hudson than seperating the parts.
Good Luck Kramer0 -
I agree, if I were in the market for a 53 it would look like great way to get started.

These are all good ideas. Another, might be to advertise it in the WTN. If you're in no rush, of course, since the next possible issue (that your ad would appear in) would come out in mid-March. If you don't happen to be an H-E-T member you can place the ad for free, by working with an existing member (such as me) and using their name as a reference when you send in the ad to the newsletter.
If you're in a rush, set a minimum price and put the whole thing on Ebay as one auction.0 -
Thanks for the advice.
I know a coupe or hardtop would be more valuable but its a 4 door. Not a rust bucket. Just needs to be restored and in a bunch of pieces. I would like to have 1 person take it all. Not looking to get rich off of it.
I guess Ill get out my camera and start taking pictures and documenting what I have. Ill post it here when Im done.
Thanks again,

Hi all,
Here are a couple of quick pics I took of my Hudson. That hydro is real nice. Really rebuilt right. Got a bunch of bits and pieces in boxes to go with it.
Honestly I really don't even know what to list it at.Any interest please let me know. I'll answer any questions you might have as well.
Thanks

Sorry your adventure is ending. I am interested in your car. How can I get in touch with you. I live in Burbank. Not to far from Santa Barbara. My phone # is 818 845 2945. Lee0 -

Just trying to understand the reason for the sale of your car. If the economy is the reason for the sale of your project, I'm very sorry to hear the news. We've probably all heard plenty of these stories here lately and I understand completely. My wife was recently laid off but was lucky enough to find another job in the interim (23% pay-cut, but's it's better than unemployment).
If the bad block is the reason for the sale, blocks are available and even re-built engines if that is what you need. I'm sure Bill A. could help you with another block.
Your car looks like a good solid project. All of the advice you have gotten so far has been sound. I would certainly advertise here first and see what you get. The WTN will have many more readers if there are no nibbles here. Project cars are notoriously harder to sell (and don't bring what you have in them). Only an avid Hudnut will be able to tell what you have and what you don't. A newbie would be at a loss.
Unfortunately, the 4-doors aren't nearly as desirable as the 2's. If it were a 2, I'd pounce on it myself if at all possible. I just happen to have an extra engine waiting for my next project.
Post as many pics as you can and get some idea of how much you are looking to get for her. Last resort is to part it out. Try and sell the whole pkg. Trouble with parting it out, you'll end up with a shell that no one will want and another Hudson will go to the scrap yard (meaning China).0 -
I'm afraid the economy is the reason. Hope it changes soon....
I hear you on the 4 vs 2 door thing. I know they aren't as popular but actually I like 4 door hornets better. I think there is something smoother about the lines. Maybe I'm just funny that way.
Thanks all,

I have a 52 4 dr Twin H Hornet. When at cars shows, and people are peeping inside, I just open the back door and invite them to get in..and watch the reaction.
First of all, they can't believe you'd let them touch it, let alone get in. Then they can't believe how big and roomy it is inside. Probably the only car at the show they've seen the inside of.
Then start the motor while they're looking at it. They love this stuff, and nobody else at the show is doing it.0 -

Josh,
You're right! I let a couple of kids sit in my 35 Terraplane once. The Mom and Dad were nervous about the kids hurting something but I told them it's only a car. They couldn't believe the doors opened "backwards". I think their jaws are still dragging the ground......

Really sorry Mr. Kramer, the economy and a major nerve disease has hit my family pretty hard as well. Thought about selling my Hudson Coupe (everything is in pieces) but am holding on for now. Though if we loose our home, which is a real possibility, I may be forced to. It is hard times for many of us and it is especially hard when we have to let go of something we love.

Wow
almost didn't have a Hudson to sell. Or a house for that matter. Santa Barbara fires stopped a couple of hundred feet from my house. Had to evacuate.
For 2 days thought I had lost everything. Really puts life into perspective.
A couple of you had contacted me earlier. If you can resend that would be appreciated. (Things are a bit disorganized here at the moment!)

Sure glad to hear you "survived" the fires. Having been thru it, back in 1947 in the big Maine fires" I can tell you that it is so nerve racking that even today, 60 years later, I find myself getting nervous when there are long dry spells where-ever I'm at. You never forget it.

Hi all,
Well, one person was interested in my '53 but seems the economy hit him too!
I thought the clifford head, edmunds and twin-h intakes, exhaust and nice rebuilt hydro would garner more interest than they did. I'd still prefer to sell it all in one go to someone in the hudson club.
If you might be interested, please contact me. Heres the pics from earlier:
