Hudson starters
Can you still buy a new starter for a 308 from NAPA, or some other source, and if so, does anyone know the NAPA number ?
The starter on my Coupe started to "miss" engaging now and again awhile back, and the problem got progressively worse until now it just sits there and spins, but does not engage.
So I yanked it out, took a look at the bendix, decided that was the problem, then looked at another starter I had on the bench, and the bendix on that one acted just like the first one. Sooo -- I decided -- stupid me, I'll bet the problem was really a weak battery, and not the starter at all, and I took it out for nothing !!
So I paints up the original starter, and gets it looking all nice and purdy, and puts it back in again, and voila' --- it does the same thing !! Just sits there and spins.
Well now I'm a bit choked, and I'm thinking I must have TWO wonky starters I guess, but where you gonna find a fix it Guy who knows six volt fifty year old positive ground starters ? Anyway, I ain't gonna take it to some shop, have them tell me its OK, ( I've already done that a year ago with one of these two starters ), put it back in again, and have the same thing happen all over again. Uh-uh, nooo way !!
I'd rather just buy a new one, and be done with it. Its only fun the first time -- doing it all over again twice really sucks !!

Probably stating the obvious, but have you checked that the spiral is not gunked up, causong the pinion not to centrifuge in? A good clean out with kerosene to wash out accumulated dirt and grease usually works.

Also take a look inside the bell housing and see if the ring gear teeth are worn down or missing.0

If you're just looking for a new bendix then yes, you can still get them at NAPA for hydromatics. The NAPA number is BK 656-1085. This is a Balkamp number and may have to be ordered. If you go to an electrical shop that rebuilds them, then the number is Accurate 3-520. In addition to checking the bendix for problems, look at the oilite bushing and make sure its not worn out. You may have to replace this as well.0

I checked that as soon as I pulled the starter the first time Dave, and everything looks ok there. That led me to thinking Bendix, but it worked freely, and seemed to engage when I ran it out by hand, but thought it maybe a bit "loose", so went and checked another one I had laying on a shelf, just to compare.
That one worked and felt exactly the same, so I decided first one must be ok, and went looking for another problem, which led me to "weak battery" ??
Charging that up, re-installing the starter, and finding no change, then led me to thinking "just get a new starter and be done with it" !!
However, that's probably the easy way out, ( if I could even ever find a new one ), so I guess it's pull this one or the other one apart, and just fix it !!
Gotta fix the defibulator, and keep that great Hudson heart beating !!
Letting a Hudson flatline just ain't cool.

Thanks Hudzilla !! I'll run those numbers this morning at NAPA, and see what comes up. There is a starter repair shop across the street from NAPA here too, so maybe they'll have parts -- at least a bendix if not the whole sheboodle.
Bushing looks ok, but wouldn't hurt to replace that anyway, while its apart.
I appreciate the input. Thanks again.

Yes I did check for "sticking" of the bendix Geoff, and it seemed to work freely, but now that I think of it, maybe cetrifugal force is "less" that working it with my fingers ??
I'll try cleaning it up with some solvent, and see if that helps. Does a Guy put a little grease on before re-installing, or is the proper procedure to leave it dry, or maybe light oil ?? I'm thinking maybe grease will gunk up again over time, and if this actually was the problem, it'll reoccur somewhere down the line, probably right when I least want it to happen, like when I'm using it as a wedding car or some other critical event.0 -
They are supposed to be left dry.0

When doing this make VERY sure the gear on the bendix starter is the EXACT length as the one on the origional Hudson starter. If you get a gear with longer teeth it will chew up your flywheel because it can retract out of the engage position far enough to the retract position. The other problem is that you won't be able to remove the starter from the car. Ford 8N and 9N bendixes are fine if you have an EXACT copy of a Hudson bendix.0 -

I've pulled the starter out again, ( third time now ), and juiced it up on the bench to see what it would do. It spins ok, and the bendix spins out alright, but it dosen't extend all the way out, --- only to about a half inch from the end. Thusly, I'm assuming this is some kind of bendix issue, since I imagine it should go out fully, so as to engage the flywheel, but maybe not ?? Maybe it only goes ot as far as it needs to, to mesh with the flywheel adequately, and does its job from there ??
Anyway, since its Sunday, the starter Guy in my town is closed, so I guess I'll take it to him tomorrow, and see what he says. Maybe he'll spot the problem right off, and have parts too
Hardly the way my luck goes, but stranger things could happen.

We do have a farm supply locally bartibog, so I'll give them a call too, and see what they have.
There's still a lot of those old 9N's around going strong to this day, so who knows, maybe the whole dang starter for one of these will fit on if the nosecone is the same, due to using the same bendix.
Would have to look identical too though, --- everything else in the car is.0 -

I have used Ace before and would recommend them. Glenn Cheaney is the guy that does the starter restorations. They're kind of pricey, but I can't imagine anyone doing a better job. I know he does a lot of really high end stuff (Duesy's, etc.), so his quality is top notch.0 -

It sounds like the starter is ok but that you have developed a bad ground at the frame or therwise. These old starters need every ampere that's available and sometimes, over the years, the wire connection gets progressively burnt. Does the starter get hot when in the car and energized. if so, remove the ground and see if the wires are corroded/crispy.0
