700r4

Hi everyone and merry Christmas.

I was wondering if any one here has ever put a 700R4 transmission behind a 308 with the 307 rear end. I'm thinking that the overdrive on it with the tall rear end would make a very nice hi-way cruiser.

  • If you use the search feature, you will find several threads on this subject. It should work just fine, Fred Connors did one for a customer who likes to "give the pocket rockets" a run for there money. The rearend ratio for that car was a 3:73 to 1 , great acceleration, and with overdrive and lockup comfortable cruising on the freeways. Lou Cote

Jim, I think you'd find a 3:07 is too much gear to put behind the 700R4. A 3.58 is better, but I expect you'd still be dropping out of top gear on a lot of hills. 3.73 gears are available for the Dana axle ('52 and later) and are, in my view, about right. Plenty of takeoff zoom, and a final ratio of around 2.70 on the road.
  • better read a few articles on the 700r4 TV cable there seems to be a million articles out there because its a problem. there is a important peice that hooks to the carb linkage that gives the corrected geomitry for all name brand carbs. don't know if they make it for hudson linkage. if you don't have it correct you better know how to rebuild one every year or less.
  • Frank that"s a good point about the cable. Could be fun to make work properly.
  • The main part of the cable is two fold,1)to raise transmission mainline pressure in response to throttle opening, 2) to provide kickdown- passing gear. To do a custom setup as on a Hudson, you will need to check mainline pressure rise with a gauge. Line pressure MUST rise as soon as gas pedal moves. Shift points should occur at 15-17 mph, 24-27 mph, 32-40 mph. On lockup there are several options, I prefer after 4 th gear only. There are some tuneable lockup controllers available for the 700r4. • what about the 200R4, does it use a cable as well?
  • Yes the 200 series ; 200 or 200C 3speeds, the 200R4 4 speed all use a cable. Thats how the general designed it. I had a 200R4 in my 87 Monte Carlo SS, worked good, they were still working the bugs out of the 700 series. That car had the 3.73 rear gears in it factory, at 70 mph about 2000 rpm. More food for thought. Lou Cote Ps Have you seen any of my cousins, The Dovachecks {sp?} of Tilley,Around the Lethbridge area?
  • Checkout these links they will give you all the info you need about TV cable and the last links are a company that provides TV adjustment solutions I would send them an email explain your Twin H setup and see what they say.

  • Sean those 1st two are great info.

    thanks
  • Yes all the info you need to successfully make this work with your Hudson. If you email them a pic of your setup I would bet they would have a solution for you using their EZ TV setup.
