Armrests and straps look really nice. It's good you had the stainless for the armrests as well. I've come up with three sets of armrests and yet to find the stainless trim pieces.

    Good Morning Russ,

Yes, I was lucky and purchased front armrests from Bill Albright at Nov 2007 Laughlin meet which included trim that I had polished along with all interior / exterior stainless and chrome plating requirements. Upholstery shop already painted plastic and upholstered rear armrests and like you looking for stainless piece (will fabricate something) before assembling rear armrest again.

Went to help on car Thursday and Allen is a true perfectionist, he completely scraped 56 years of undercoating and road tar then sand blasted to original sheet metal. Glad he did because we found a couple of not bad rust soft area’s that he’ll cut out and weld new stronger pieces. I purchased another two quarts of black POR-15 great product and instead of sealing with a sealer, we decided to do some thing on the under side a little different; we are going to use black POR-15 on it. The POR-15 is great stuff and looks good and Allen used it many times, it will stop the rust forever or at least until my demise. I am returning Monday to paint entire underside, maybe if time permits use Lizard Skin Spray Gun & Sound control in interior, also will be painting "Quick Performance" Ford 9" rear-end package, if we can't complete on Monday I'll return after Christmas or the following week.

As far as what YTD progress is completed, the holes/smoothing of the firewall is about 75% finished. Inner wheel wells and other under hood parts are power coated, the floor pans are completely well fitted and welded, the *engine & transmission are back in and finishing the brake booster mounting. The trunk, doors, hood and one quarter panel are in second stage of priming and almost done, even with educated hand feel and eye examination very difficult to find imperfections. Although more costly using mostly PPG & 3M products makes the job look and finish so much better.

    * Going removed engine again, although it’s a newly rebuilt crated red painted Chevy engine, we are going to paint again, probably paint the rebuilt 700R4 transmission again too.

Overall, since Allen has picked up my car he completed a great deal with professionalism / pride work which has satisfied me. In fact if Hudson Hornet is finished by first quarter of 2009 he’s going to pick up my 62 Buick Skylark I started before purchasing Hornet and start to finish my other unfinished project.

Received my new front window's, had all new solar tinted flat glass cut already, ordered and waiting for Hot Rod A/C set-up, maybe by the end of next week can measure and order new drive shaft? As I have been doing in the past I'll post progress pictures.

To all, have a Merry Christmas and Happy, Healthy, Prosperous New Years, by Chinese calendar 2009 is the year of Ox / Cow which is my birth year and associated with hard work but I am getting too old for that now. Enjoy your weekend,

  • Additional work completed yesterday, engine & transmission removed again, put car back on rotisserie and spend a couple hours using high pressure air and vacuum cleaning out sand, dirt and gravel from inner rails, I thought I had got them clean last year but since blasting the car twice additional build up occurred. Attached pictures of before and after of under carriage which was painted with POR 15, will apply another coat next week, area’s not painted require some additional work. Booster brake was fitted and Allen fabricated brackets and bolted unit in place, some additional work on sheet metal which looks and feel great. In between working on my car, Allen’s friend came over and helped put paint booth together in which Hornet will be the first painted, still have to square it, electrical work and waiting for front section arrival. When I retuned home I learned that good member friend mailed my center scissor parts and rebuilt dashboard; speedo / clock / fuel-temp cluster. Realizing how difficult it’s to find coupe rain-vent shades I took a chance and was winning bidding of 15 NOS Hudson pieces offered on eBay http://tinyurl.com/8geljz and hopefully I could use or find four necessary for coupe. Can’t do much until after the holidays and want to take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Healthy, Prosperous New Years.

  • Looks great, Ray! You and Allen keep up the good work!
  • Hi Dave, thanks for your vote of confidence.

Its hard to not be jealous, you and Allen are doing great, you and Allen have a nice place to work and we hope you finish soon. What kind of exhaust system will you use?? Make it loud. Drive safe and have a good Xmas.. Bob
  • Good Morning Bob,

Thanks for your email, it's not my intent to make anyone jealous, purpose of various updated threads is to be informative, share restoration process with other members and pride of ownership. For years I watched FORUM and I too was somewhat jealous reading and seeing pictures of members project cars during and after completion. As mentioned many times I don't want to take any credit or mislead anyone into thinking I am cable of doing what Allen the real builder, with pride of workmanship is doing. Although I am not jealous; but do wish I had the skill that so many of you have to include Allen; besides Hudson Hornet's are my favorite cars, hopefully we'll complete in 1st quarter of 2009. It's been only 11 months since I retrieved my car from another builder who screwed it up and his limited shoddy work had to be undone by Allen. I certainly am happy with YTD progress and quality of work. Enclosed in picture is my new header on top of K-GAP box received with complete weather stripping, stainless steel clips etc.

Once again Merry Christmas and Happy Healthy, Properous New Years and I trust and hope our military community will be safe, sound and return home soon.

  • Worked on '52 Hornet restoration today, almost all the fabrication and rust issues completed, although I didn't do, I learned one thing today, cutting and grinding 5/16 metal frame isn't easy...Sorting out boxes of old nuts and bolts removed which is time consuming, going to buy a lot of replacements but now I have to figure out where they and many clamps fit, it's like a massive puzzle. If you are interested I posted a couple of pictures in http://oldcarandtruckpictures.com/ message sent.

P.S. Anyone have a good right side shackle and bushing for sale, if so please email me at kada9528@cox.net or has anyone found / used shackle from another source?

    Thanks,

    Ray
  • Fortunately I was lucky and received NOS left/right shackles...Took apart rear springs and sand blasted, next week will bring to shop to rebuild and or if required add a leaf...All welding finished and will apply a second coat of POR-15 to undercarriage next Friday.

Quick question; going to complete rear seat back sections upholstery next week, do all three sections have a button or only the center piece?

    Thanks,

All 3. I'm trying to think of where I saw a picture on the Forum that showed it?.

Also,I find it funny to see someone else vacuuming all the dirt and rocks that are found in the frame member shown in the pictures above!!LOl,those are always FULL !!
  • Thanks Clutch Guy,

I forgot how many buttons when I took apart, so I'll use three larger size when doing upholstery work...Picked up my rear curtosey arm rests yesterday which look real good. Yes, seemed like never ending process; it took hours of vacuuming and high pressure air forced through rails, then scrapping off 57 years of road tar, then blasting off undercoating takes a lot of time, however it's behind us and we're moving forward. Some of the un-painted white spots in picture that required some rust cut out, had metal replaced, grinded and pleased that's all done. I intend to give undercarriage second coat of POR-15, eBay purchased front replacement floor panels are completely welded / grinded to includle filling in firewall holes and smoothing out surface's. When I went to service my SUV at Lincoln Mercury dealer, someone stole my camera with chip containing all my pictures, just purchased new camera on Amazon and as soon it arrives I will take and post some pictures next week. Most of the car is primed and should be ready to start painting in a couple more weeks...

    More at later day,

    Ray
  • Worked on car 1/30 - 1/31, any of rust issues were cut out and replaced / welded with new sheet metal, second coat of POR-15 applied on entire undercarriage, interior, roof, firewall wall holes closed, seam sealer also applied. Hopefully, exterior of body painting may start mid week if so I'll attached addition pictures.

  • 2/2 Removed engine and transmission again, even though my engine is newly crated / painted Chevy cherry red, I want to repaint, so I spent many hours sanding off old paint...Also expereiced same problem that Bill Albright had with his '53 coupe with center trunk panel behind two chrome pieces. Not having the luxury of many part cars to chose from, Allen cut panel out, also back guard plate and fabiricated replacements, I believe before we finish evey questionable piece of rust will be removed and replaced with sheet metal. Allen finished afterr I left to drive home therefore didin't take picture of installed center back panel, but we used Weld 2 pimer before welding metal to metal and the brushed seam sealer applied Saturday dried like a rock.

    Attention: pbebop@gmail.com

Reference your question, yes behind the sheet metal there is another piece spot welded on unibody frame which center back section is welded on. I'll attach a couple more pictures of before and after weld. Pic one, before removal of center piece, pic two shows rust back guard piece spot welded to unibody frame, pic three, after Allen fabricated back guard sheet metal, sprayed primer weld 2 and welded to unibody frame, note center piece inside trunk with surface rust that Allen also fabricated and shaped like original part intended.

I hope my pictures and explaination was helpful?

Thanks, these pics and notes did help me understand how you and Allen are doing this repair. Mine should be done similar. Thanks for the time and info. Bob

You will see from pictures 52 Hornet CC is getting closer to completion. As with entire restoration all the sheet metal has been prepped, primed, sanded, block several times over; after painting fenders, hood, quarter panels properly wrapped and put in storage. As many of you already experienced with your personal restoration projects; some pictures will reflect amount of work required to bring these grand old beautiful fine automoble's of American history back to life. All sheet was removed and both front and back of each piece was sand blasted, prepped and painted without any concern for time and used the best supplies & material available on marketplace...Allen is on his way to Portland, therefore we'll have a two week delay before restarting project and from 4/20 -5/1 I'm going to Eastern Europe, hopefully without any hiccups, car will be finished by the end of May?

Thanks Dan, I must admit after looking at your and Ken Gates inspirationally web-site's years ago, I wanted to complete a high quality frame off restoration and although I experienced disappointing past setbacks; yes I am now confident of getting Hornet on the road again...
