Overdrive Questions

I have a single lever overdrive transmission in my car. Since the car was rough when I got it the overdrive function switches were not in place. The overdrive was operated totally manually by an on-off switch connected to the overdrive solenoid. It actually worked OK. I am wondering if I should try to make the OD function as intented using the govenor function and other electrical interfaces. I have talked to a few guys about this and some felt that the completely manual mode was better in that it allowed more flexibility in the driver control. I am looking for input on this. If I decide to restore the factory function, does anyone know sources for the governor switch and the lockout switch. I do have a new kick down switch and relay.

Someone will add a helpful comment soon, but in the meantime I'll just say that obtaining a good used governor and lockout switch shouldn't be a problem. I see them all the time at various Hudson flea markets. If you're looking for one this winter, I'd just go through the WTN classifieds and contact some of the vendors who seem to have a wide range of NOS and used Hudson parts for sale. You'll find what you are looking for.

I've been told that some guys disconnect the kickdown switch under the accelerator and substitute a dash-mounted switch because they are afraid that the sudden torque (when you stomp the accelerator to downshift) may damage the transmission. Putting the switch on the dash, means that you can manually engage the overdrive while easing off the gas, which puts less of a strain on it.

There is of course some debate as to whether this is necessary. Depends on how powerful your engine is. For a 7X, well....yeah, could be a problem. But I have an older Hudson (with the 212 cid engine) with a retro-fit overdrive. I've put the kickdown switch under the gas pedal (its normal position). No danger of damage from massive torque, with a 101 horsepower!

I assume you are working on a stepdown model. There are two different wireing and relay setups on the step downs. The later system is a bit less complex and works just fine regardless of the transmission used.. I have a 49 that I use a single headlight type relay and the stock solenoid and governor. Works just fine. I am missing the wire to kill the ignition during kickdown, but it seems to work without it. I do have a 262 so I don't think I'm going to twist the input shaft off! I'm also using 12 volts without a resistor which has been working going on 6 years now. Pm me if you have any wireing questions.
