Misc. questions around the campfire

I've been playing with my parts in the garage and started thinking, bad idea.

1. Can a hudson 112 engine(175ci) be turned into a 212 ci by using a 212 crank shaft and rods?

2. Is a 48 or later bellhousing the same as a 47 and ealier, and will a later transmission fit the earlier bellhousing?

3. Has anyone tried to mate a ford 5 speed to a hudson?

4. Is there any other clutch plate to use instead of the wet/cork clutch?

Any ideas?

    1. Suppose it's possible with good amount of machine shop work.

    2. No..... supposedly you can bolt the later trans to the earlier bell housing. Something you would think about if adding an OD.

    3. Not that I've heard of.

    4. no ...... been done before but NO. LOL
  • The step down bell housing will not fit the 47. The transmission thru 51 will bolt to 47 bell housing and linkage make right up. I put a overdrive single lever trans from a 51 in my 47 pickup. Only problem the step down overdrive is longer and you have to pull engine to remove the clutch or trans.

You need to change the crankshaft and rods to convert to a 212 c.i. You can use the 112 head, which will raise the compression considerably, which is advantageous for modern fuels, but you woul dmost likely have to use premium fuel to stop "pinking".
  • Since i can't use the later bellhousing anyone want to sell a 47 bellhousing?

I already have a later model transmission lined up, maybe.

Why do you want to re-invent the wheel,it's not required when it comes to the wet clutch. I do have the bell-housing you need.

does he also need a dipper tray from the 212? or are they the same? I would expext the long stroke engine to have deeper troughs but i guess they could have compensated in the rod cap dipper designs to use the same part.

Don't know what you mean exactly by a "Ford 5 speed"- but Ford did use the Borg Warner T5 5 speed overdrive in Mustangs. Wilcap does make a conversion kit to install the T5 in stepdowns- uses an adapter plate on the back of the engine, and the bellhousing and flywheel that goes with the T5. Use a T5 out of an early ('89 or earlier) Chev S-10 pickup, because its the one where the shifter is forward where it needs to be (shifter on the Mustang and Camaro models is way back by the tailshaft, and in your Hudson, the shifter will be in the middle of the seat). Couple of problems- you need to take the crankshaft out of the engine (or at least unbolt and lower it), in order to get the bolts in from the back of the crank to bolt on the flywheel; and the guy from Wilcap says he hasn't got the pilot bearing/bushing worked out yet. I have a T5 and bellhousing, but haven't ordered the kit yet. I have a machinist friend (and fellow Hudsonite) who says we can work out the pilot bearing issue. I'm just trying to work up the energy to pull the engine in the mighty Hornet.
  • Mike;

Do you have a number for Wilcap?I am able to get a T-5 out of a Mustang, maybe the shifter tower can be swapped like in the old MGs. Do the flywheel bolt holes match up or does something need to be redrilled?

Is the Jet 202 and big six rear engine plate/bellhousing the same?

  • Thanks for the link.

Might be able to make things fit.richter

Don't know whether Jet and stepdown bellhousings are compatible, and Wilcap won't know, either. So finding that out would be the first step. Also, the shift tower might be a "deal-breaker"- I think the housings are different. I'll try to remember to look at my S-10 T5 this weekend. Also, there are usually some for sale on fleabay- search "S-10" "T5" in ebay motors. You should be able to tell from the pics, whether it will work. I think Wilcap supplies a flywheel that will fit the back of the crank, but its been a while since I've looked into the project. Gotta get a couple of tractors fixed first, before I've got room in the shop.
