Removing brake drums

Dear HET members,

Just a simple question. How do I remove the front brake drums of my Hudson Coupe of 1950? I removed the wheel, retracted the brake shoes so the drum runs free. But the drum is still very tight. Do I need to remove the center mount or do I need special tooling to remove the drum ?? It must be simple I guess. Anyone ??

Most likely you need to go in behind the backing plate and 'back off' the adjuster in order to remove the drum. There probably is a ridge that has built up on the drum catching on the shoes not allowing the drum to pass over the shoes.

  • Hello mr Spencer,

Thanks for your quick reply. I expect you to be right so thats why adjusted the brake shoes. But when i have a thorough look on drawings in the Mechanical Procedure Manual for the car then I see the center axle nut being taken of including the bearings ? So do I need to remove this nut ?

Yeah you remove the cotter pin (if it's there) and the nut and washer. You don't necesarily have to take out the bearings but if it hasn't been done in some time you may want to do it anyways.
  • Great Aaron. Thanks for your reply too, I'll try that right away. The pin is still in. Good to know that the bearings can rest in place. Any good address (webpage) for wheel cylinder / master cilinder replacement parts? My brakes didn't work suddenly (frightning !) so some parts need to be replaced or refurbished.

  • Hello Aaron,

I just succeed in taking of the brake drum. Easy job if you know how so. Thanks again. For my future problems I will surely use the Hudson Forum again.

If the shoes are 2 1/4 wide,

    Coni-Seal WC13220

    Coni-Seal WC13221

If it's a wasp with the 1 3/4 wide shoes,
