212 exhaust

I'm going to get my exhaust manifold split on my '37 212 engine. Plans are to run a set of dual exhausts with Smithy mufflers. Looking at the manifold on the engine, it appears very easy to remove it, plus all of the fasteners are readily accessible.

Question I have is - Does the manifold have a gasket between the manifold and the block? If it does, who carries a replacement, if one becomes necessary? I'd really hate to pull it off and discover that I need a gasket and one can not be had!

It looks like it does. You can buy the gaskets from these people.

In all my years of fooling with vintage engines, the only cars I have seen with no manifold gaskets were Nashes and some English OHV Ford 4 & 6 cylinders that used a header tube clamped to the cylinder head, or in the case of the Nash flathead 6 , the side of the block. Those things were notorious for the tubes starting to leak after a few years of expansion and contraction, followed by the owners/ mechanics over tightening the clamp bolts which only crushed the tube to make it leak even more. I remember my '50 Nash Ambassador at highway speeds sounded like an old Hoover vacuum with a flatulence problem. When not leaking they had a distinctive moaning sound, kinda like OOOOOOOOOM, OOOOOOOOO, OOOOOOOOOOOM! Kenneth (not as deaf as it may seem when hearing aids are on and working right).
Ken, still waiting for an answer to the parts you told me about. Walt Mordenti.

    Hey Patrick,

I was also contemplating a split manifold for my 36T. My question is can it be done so as not to heat up the side mounted distributor? I found gaskets in two places: egay of course, and I have a local gasket guy out here called Olsons gaskets. He has EVERYTHING and what he doesnt have he can make.

Let me know how it comes out.

    Thanks,

    T Jeff
